CCP would like you to buy some EVE ship SKINS in its cash shop

EVE Online

CCP is ramping up the focus on its cash shop thanks to a new dev blog examining EVE Online’s ship SKIN system. Ship skins are purchased in CCP’s item mall and may be bought or sold for ISK on the in-game market prior to activation.

SKINs are used by activating them on a character, which then grants that character permanent access to the SKINs that persists through ship and pod loss. CCP is also adding time-limited SKINs as drops to EVE Online, but currently has no plans to sell them for real money.

I’m all for pimping out your ships and whatnot, but the majority of EVE players hardly ever scroll in enough to admire the details. Some players might do it just to show off how much money they have, but I don’t see the average player buying much of these. Someone will buy them though.

Peregrine_Falcon MikedotFoster What else would consumers of a product be? Friends you invite over for games of scrabble? People you loan your truck to when they need to move apartments? Customers are sources of income.. whaaaa?!!

Slaphammer It is not gated content. Players can purchase them in the cash shop and then sell them on the in game market for in game currency to other players. So if players really want them they don’t have to part with any cold hard cash just in game cash.
I think a lot of Star Trek Online cash shop stuff could not be sold on its in game auction house?
I could be wrong about that though as I hardly played it really.

Ponyprincess because subscribers are leaving, meaning revenues are going down, while costs of making new content are going up.

Subscription + cash shop is the worst of all worlds.  Star Trek Online used to be particularly offensive this way, but going F2P made their cash shop less insulting.

Nope, not when you already pay to play the game. GFY CCP.

I guess we know why F2P games need a cash shop, but why the hell do P2P games need one?

Snky Styopa books, which in practically every case except Baen want you to pay again for the ebook, and even in Baen’s case want you to pay again for the audio book.

Because, news flash, there are costs associated with producing and distributing things, and people like to get paid for their labor.

Styopa What video game doesn’t try to milk you twice? MMOs, MOBAs, FPS, RTS, RPG, sports. It’s all the same. Might I suggest books?
