Take in a full hour of Anarchy Online’s new beginner experience

Wondering how Anarchy Online’s revamped newbie experience has panned out? Second to actually playing the game yourself (which, y’know, is always an option), you can vicariously experience it by watching someone else’s hands-on video.

YouTuber and friend of Massively OP Beau Hindman spent an hour with the recent AO patch to see what it’s like to be a beginner in this classic MMO today, which you can watch below. Patch 18.7.0 overhauled a lot of the game’s core mechanics, including changes to classes, nanos, and perks.

Polyanna Not really. Both are pretty busy places as they both have their advantages and disadvantages. All Bor really lost was the Jobe Whompah.

MatthewWard Windows 10 TP is atm in a more experimental state. The build from the beginning of the year was much more stable. Try compatibility modes or if this doesn’t help, think about switching to 8.1 until the full release of W10 drops.

If the new engine ever comes out,i have a feeling the game be pretty crowded. But i hope they do more than update the new engine. The planet of Rubi Ka is a ghost town because of shadowlands. They need to find a way to bring players back to the old zones so the game feels more alive. Running around the city zones is sad because they are empty. I remember on the weekends every nightclub would be packed with players. The streets would be filled with players running around. I miss seeing the game like that.

Feydakin You’re not missing much. I played the NPE beta for probably 100 hours or so, and really I can hardly tell whether I’m playing the “new engine” or live without side-by-side screens. AO is not going to look like TSW when (if) this new engine ever is rolled out, because they haven’t, and never will, re-roll the thousands of old low-quality assets that account for about 95% of how the game looks and feels when you play it. So once you get over “wow, waving grass,” there’s really nothing of any consequence to it.

So, since this rolled to live, has the New ICC replaced Bor as the de facto social hub?

Good to see Beau! :D
Still hoping for the graphics/engine update to happen… I know FunCom has had so me issues, but I love all of their games. Not sure why they aren’t doing better. One thing that I wish is that they would switch AO to buy to play after the upgrade. I think they would get a HUGE influx of people if they did that. I know I would play again if I could access the expansion content without having to pay a monthly sub. I already spend so much on this hobby it’s hard to justify it for a game this old unfortunately… and/or an all access deal, I would pay for that.

Ordegar SexyKingJesus ZenDadaist that is the update that will have me try this game again. I don’t want to start over twice, and I don’t want to miss the new graphics in the starting experience.

I love the graphics in TSW, so if this is anything close to them, I’ll give it a try then.

MatthewWard I’m playing on win 8 and it runs fine in 1920 x 1080 high settings. Are you sure the problem isn’t windows 10 witch is still an unfinished technical preview and has a lot of work left to be done on it

The very first Mission is “Kill 10 rats”, sorry “cleaning robots”….. AO was my very first MMO, and I loved it, but it’s just too old to attract new players in it’s current state. The only way to save the game would have been a new engine so it can compete with the 100’s of other MMOs out today, This sandbox game is a true gem, hidden behind a very dated look, that most people will never experience.

I resubbed to try the new content, but no matter what I tried, couldn’t get a stable frame rate unless I was looking directly at a wall..
20 fps isn’t playable as the mouse input is tied to the frame rate.
Tried everything to get it running better, even a clean win 10 install and AO on a dedicated SSD, but just seems DX7 doesn’t play nicely with newer hardware.
Will try again with the new engine, when it finally drops.
On the plus side, the new content that I did get to experience was great!
