LOTRO’s getting new dungeons with the Osgiliath instance cluster

Lord of the Rings Online’s Update 16 is heading our way on Monday, May 4th, and with it comes the first new instance cluster in a very, very long time.

The team penned a dev diary today that talks about the new Osgiliath instance cluster, which it says was created in response to fan demand. “After thinking things over, we knew just what kind we wanted to build for you next: a little love letter to Lord of the Rings Online past,” developer Ben Schneider writes.

The Osgiliath cluster is composed of the three-player Sunken Labyrinth, the three-player Ruined City, and the full-fellowship Dome of Stars, where players will face off against a Nazgul. As a bonus, the dungeons scale from level 50 to 100, meaning that players who are ready for Moria can begin to take on those challenges. The team’s also split the instances into two tiers of difficulty, with Tier 2 “bringing the hard” to skilled players.

Huxys I wish but no…
– Turbine is not really a MMO company anymore, they are transitioning to churning out WB-licensed mobile games
– The LOTR license expires in 2017 and may not be renewed
– There is still a pending lawsuit brought by the Tolkien Estate, which could torpedo both the current and future games
– Any new game would probably have a very simple UI aimed at consoles, since that is where most sales are, (regardless of the ‘PC Master race’)
– Any new game will be a shadow of the former, simply because the former has been in development for 8 years now and has a huge amount of development time
– So much more competition in the market, attention spans are shorter, play times are shorter, f2p is more prevalent – any new game as a much shorter time to prove itself successful or be pushed aside for the latest fad. These days you can probably get your MMO fix for free just touring all the new Betas that come out.

Hopefully tier 2 challenge wont be too hard as its the only way to get tokens for the new 5-slot essence armour, and at 20/piece and 3 tokens per 3man run (for the whole group to share), the grind could be terribad.

MesaSage Apparently that’s how Silverlode rolls.  Never been there, since I’m on Brandywine.  During the recent anniversary event I noticed the “layers” icon in the lower right, so I guess there were a decent number of people on anyway.  But Brandywine’s always been one of the top 3 most populated.

Syppi Huxys I can see it happening. In the 2020s as LOTR media itself may reboot (or at least start to). Exploring middle earth on say, a VR platform, might be a thing. In the meantime LOTRO players can just hope they reach Mordor in the next few years before the game shuts down. Basically my answer is that a ‘LOTRO remake/reboot’ probably isn’t going to happen for a while, but at some point the LOTR itch will happen. Occurs every couple of decades it seems, in some way…

Syppi Excellent news. I am one of the Silverlodes that is experiencing the loneliness in the world and will keep an eye out for the transfers, which im sure MO will report on as well when it happens.

Slaphammer melissamcdon yes there is, I am among those with fatigue.   And I think the crappy Hobbit movies really ruined the prospects for this game experiencing a good influx.  It boggles the mind… the trilogy was so good, the hobbit movies so terrible… sigh

I think the point @mellissamcdon is trying to make is that the point of an mmo is to have that option of grouping and playing with other people. On low population servers there are maybe a couple others in the same zone as you, which makes it hard. $25 server transfers shouldn’t be part of the players expense, Turbine should have either made server transfers free or take a few offline and merge. I love the game but Turbine has either given up on it ever being relevant or WB really just doesn’t care to invest money into the game anymore. Point being, an MMO should provide the same expereince for everyone. 2-3 servers out of the couple dozen shouldn’t be the only ones to experience the game it was ment to be played.

Huxys If it was a sandbox I would be all for it. If it’s another Theme park I most likely would pass. If it has a cash shop I would pass no matter what.  And a big fat no to Turbine .
