The Daily Grind: What MMO has benefited the most from free-to-play?

Ultimate pens.

Back in the day, it used to be a running joke among the staff about which game would go free-to-play next. We don’t make that joke any more, chiefly because it’s no longer a joke and there are barely any candidates left anyhow. Buy-to-play, free-to-play, anything other than the old standby of box and subscription prices. That business model just isn’t working for more than a handful of titles.

But here’s an interesting question on that same theme: What game has gotten the most out of the shift? We talk a lot about the idea that most games are not using subscriptions as the only options any longer, but which out of the many titles with a business shift has gotten something good out of it? Are titles that converted like Star Trek Online the big winners, or does that honor go to other MMOs?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Cyroselle Exactly.  It was a super cheap F2P tactic.  “Oh congrats you got an earring!  Oh wait, you can’t equip it? Well if you want to equip it all you have to do is buy it!”

Oh, they very likely did play those games. The difference is (I think) that we’re all a lot older and simply have less time.

I got 3 earrings before I even hit 55 on one of my alts. Holy hell, I’d much rather they leave those in the loot tables of the mobs in that expansion, not seed the rest of the game with them. Giving me something I can’t wear unless I pay you or spend (for my personal rate of play) weeks or months grinding levels is smegging *soulless*.

Agreed, good idea to change the nomenclature.

I wish their furtextures didn’t look as if they were painted on, but to be fair, all playable races in SWTOR have that plasticine look to them, so there’s no escaping it.
There’s a lot of cool stuff in that game though, I’m not bagging on it.

The world is ironically less open than a SRPG though. In many places it’s very very corridor-ish.
SWTOR does boast superb voice acting though, some of the best in the biz, even today.

Pretty much yeah. “Here, you can try this game for free, but we’ll cripple your experience unless you pay us monthly”.
But honestly? If it weren’t for the gamble boxes I’d support that.

Financially, all of them will benefit in the short/mid term (but not in the long).

Creatively, not a single one of them has benefited.
