Dragon of Legends will be a cross-platform pixel MMO

At this point every free-to-play game is different from the others by not offering a gameplay advantage for paying money.

If you like pixel art and the promise of being able to play an MMO on both mobile and desktop clients, you should probably check out the Dragon of Legends teaser trailer just below. Yes, it’s a painfully generic name, and yes, it’s currently still very early in testing. But the idea is still pretty darn neat.

The developers are allowing would-be players to sign up for beta testing now, if you’re so inclined. Aside from offering cross-platform play, developer Thrive Games is promising a rich narrative and tools for players to help reshape the world, both of which sound like a fun ride.

As far as this sort of art style is concerned, I “did my time” growing up with a TRS-80 (monochrome, literally 128×48 pixel resolution for graphics) and Commodore 64 (forever the best computer that ever existed). I appreciate lots of people like this style, and I mean no disrespect to them, or to this game (and others like it). I just feel like I’ve “earned” the pixel candy in today’s generation of games. :)

MesaSage PizzaDoh You didn’t bother to explain your position (while speaking for the entirety of the “modern gamer”). Why is he obligated too?

Reminds me a bit of Golden Axe. I’d play.

the name made me think it was a Korean game, with all the terrible localization that has always implied =|

I actually find the sidescrolly East Asian MMOs I’ve played interesting, but never quite enough to hold my attention in the face of the incoherent translations and the fact that they usually seem fairly simple after a few hours of play (I do kind of miss the hour or two of Dungeon Hunter I used to play a year). still, always happy to see sidescrolledy MMOs.

Pixel art can be great, games like ‘Legend of Mana’, or ‘Odin Sphere’ are just beautiful and always will be. Real timeless classics that look good even today. However, the 8 bit minimalist style is lazy as fuck. It’s trendy and hip, and I imagine its extremely cheap. Any time I see ‘mobile’ or ‘browser’ I get weary. You can say it’s an alpha or early testing all day long, but at the end of the day a minimalist graphic style, with cliche music, is going to most likely end up in a final product that continues to follow those same philosophies…

Looks like it might be a fun little co-op rpg. A mmo? Not a chance.

Dystopiq  Yeah, I lived through it.  70’s, 80’s, 90’s.  When we were constrained it was art.  Games like this have a place in nostalgia, I guess, but they died a long time ago for a reason.

Good pixel art is not easy. But yeah some of it is lazy. Metal Slug has great pixel art.
