Heroes & Generals

Reto-Moto has announced that more than five million players have registered for its F2P World War II MMO shooter called Heroes & Generals. Since its July 2014 early access release, the title has “seen a steady growth in the player base.” Reto-Moto’s press blurb also touts H&G as the third most popular Steam release for all of 2014 as well of one of the 10 most popular F2P titles on Valve’s platform.

The devs have released a Heroes & Generals infographic breaking down some more impressive numbers. You can view it after the cut.

KenAddeh The steam version is a standalone (Non-browser) version. Otherwise I hear you but I was always impressed with H&G’s graphics and performance as a browser game.

Meh.

That’s all I have to say now to “Registered players” or “Player Accounts” or “Created characters” as a means of showing they’re relevance in the current realm of MMO/Multiplayer gaming.

(Personally, I would have loved to see them move away from the browser-based system. Always felt like it’s clunky being launched through a troublesome browser system which, a lot of the time for me, the map would never update correctly or show clear info about players included in battles, or other important factors. Hell, there was one time that between one patch, I couldn’t even move my tanks from our base)

eLdritchMD Rustybladez It doesn’t help that the game does it’s very best to punish you if you pick German. Mismatched tiers of tanks, crappy starting weapons etc etc.

It’s a really fun game with a lot of potential… sadly I kind of feel that they stumbled into the f2p early access trap… the game just isn’t really ready and because they have to keep it running they’re just patching and bringing in new stuff without really fleshing out the core gameplay or working too much on fixes, rebalancing and such.

f.e. the maps are all pretty terrible.. there’s like 1 good low tier map (the one with the grain fields and the swamp) and 1 good advanced map – the city.

the factory map is probably the worst map in the game, the infantry spawnpoints are horrible and it’s practically impossible to regain momentum if the attackers ever lose it.

Infantry in general has the problem that you sometimes feel a bit too much like cannon fodder, which is really awkward combined with the long “run back to the action” times.

I found the tanks and vehicles very enjoyable. Halftracks in particular in a squad of friends is awesome and really powerful as it provides mobile MG support, offers either health kits or Panzerfaust anti tank launchers AND can be used as a spawn point. Sadly all these vehicles have such high repair and rearming costs that you constantly have to farm credits playing regular infantry =(

All in all a good game though and they really are trying to make it better… They got rid of most of the hacking issues for starters. Let’s hope they keep it up

Rustybladez that’s because on the US server everyone wants to play the US troops… shocker…

but yeah the wandering part was my biggest issue as well. the spawnpoints on some of the maps are way too spaced out, making infantry combat just an exercise in running around like an idiot most of the time.

Ghostmourn Vellik that sounds like a fair bit of diversity and reward for what you have played, to me.   I love World of Tanks and it’s taken me like 2 years almost to unlock my Tiger 2 and buy it (along with a fleet of other tanks) but I’ve never paid them a penny of real money.    I’m on a quest to obtain and keep the most iconic tanks from each nation.

Ghostmourn ah.. thank you for clarifying that…  i would have imagined more like 50K online from the numbers they are kicking around here… so it’s all just cumulative then over a fair bit of time

They gave away a lot of M3 Grease guns and the shovel is about the only melee weapon n00bs can buy.

Anyways this game was almost fun when I played it.  Almost as in there was no mercy for new folks – I’d get dropped in a mostly n00b geared squad vs the veteran equipped other guys and spend a good bit of the match wandering to where I’d die next.  At the time it was always veteran player Germans vs US.

This is a fun game, for a war sim, however not too surprised by the numbers.  As others have stated, if your going to play this game completely F2P, then it is going to be a long time before you are able to play the generals side of the game(RTS).  Commanding Assault Teams and getting enough of them so that you can actually affect the battlefield is a long grind and depending on how many soldiers you have could take even longer.  It is fun to train soldiers from infantry up to the different ranks but it also makes a considerable grind that some may not make it through.

I know in my own experience, I was able to rank up a pilot, tanker and multiple infantry but got completely bored with the amount of leveling of soldiers that I had to do and stopped playing.  Maybe it’s a time for a revisit but if your looking for something that allows you access to both sides of the game without having to grind something, than this game isn’t for you.  It’s a great WWII sim and anyone who tries it should take that into consideration.  Bullet drop and real life gun play elements make this a very realistic shooter but can also make the game feel overly punishing.  It’s great for a group but if you play solo you’ll need to find an outfit on the forums to play with or make sure to follow others while in a battle as the solo route is often the hardest to do.  Still a great game for a group of friends or squad of people but gets a bit long winded when playing solo, in my experience.
