The Daily Grind: Would you try a Darkfall reboot?

THere's a big picture here that you may not be seeing.

Yesterday’s news regarding the possibility of a classic Darkfall server was pretty great. I loved Aventurine’s 2010-era fantasy gankbox, and I’d resubscribe or even repurchase the client in a heartbeat if AV moves forward.

It wouldn’t be very enjoyable without a decent-sized playerbase, though, which is why I’m tossing this informal question out to you, the MOP readers, this morning. Would you try a classic Darkfall server if one were available?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Cyroselle yep. which includes like 4-5 mob spawns per city cluster (there’s 4 city clusters).
so people can learn the combat system in safety.

I could be wrong, but if I recall right there might be safe zones in Darkfall. I think they play a lesser role in the game though.

Totally depends on how good the community would be. Also rule-enforced RPPVP would be my preference.

NatKro EBreezy Well, I don’t care about loot. My thing is usually the kind of players that play the game. Open loot pvp games usually attracts tons of griefers.  Also, a lot of people like the intensity of not knowing if they will survive their trade run/gathering session/etc.    I get that too. I enjoyed running trade packs through PVP lands in AA and sneaking around enemy territory in AoW.  But the thing with AA (not so much with AoW) is that I  don’t have to be on guard all the time. I get to choice when I PVP by going in lands during wartime, travel the sea or teleport to enemy land.  If I don’t want to do it, I stay in the safe land.  In I want the big payouts and higher rewards that come along with going in PVP land I got there. I think that evens it out.

Now that I think about it “the reward of TAKING it” sounds about right. Last time I played Salem,  I asked two players where the main town was. I was one shot killed (I was a newbie). Afterwards one guy said he killed me since he thought I had loot to sell since I was looking for town. If fact, I had nothing. I was just lost.  But, hey, it got me back to town quickly. So, I guess that was a win.

Yes i would but still think its a bad move on AVs part.. i mean the “new” darkfall is finally getting good and the population is low but nothing extreme.. and now 70-90% of the DFUW players will atleast for the first week/month play DFO and that leaves UW dead.. and like 3months down the line the population in both games will be really bad since some of the die hard darkfall fans will play UW and some DFO while the hype of playing DFO again has gone down and alot of people have left it.. they wont have 1 game with ok pop but 2 games with really low pop..

But hell yah im excited to play it! the first months of any darkfall server is the best time! and i cant wait to play Mahirim again!

jesseschulkers blood walls were made nonexistent after they made skill gain on other players give next to nothing. Grind got reduced by a whole lot in 2010 and 2012.

jesseschulkers It is commonly understood if it is to be brought back in it’s 2012 state, blood walls no longer existed and it took 2-4 weeks to max out a character.  The dev team at AV is almost completely new and have been doing a fantastic job communicating with the player base, you may want to reconsider it or at the very least sign the petition and give this game another chance, good luck!

There are few MMO experiences I enjoyed as much as the first two months of Darkfall Online. I would love to jump in but unfortunately, with the knowledge that the bloodwallers will show back up in a few months time, I will be staying away. Those first couple months were amazing fun with great back and forths with a great many enemies. But when that dude showed up naked with a grassblade and -totally trashed- my chainmail + rank 60 2h axe setup, slapping me for 60 damage while I could barely strike for 20, killed everything for me.

se7engames PatMacrotch Not in Unholy Wars no, it’s much slower, rays are now cones so they don’t miss as much, no miss aoe’s that do incredible damage, a disable that is a cone and does damage for example.  Unholy Wars version of Whirlwind with a great sword now also knocks you up and blinds you, it’s actually ridiculous and all skill has been removed.

Absolutely. Best gaming experience of my life, by far. Just please, please reduce the grind. It was like a second job trying to keep up.

Skill caps of some sort are a must.
