Elite’s Mac client benefits the PC; Powerplay update delayed

Hey Elite fans, did you miss Friday’s newsletter #75? If so, it’s worth reading for the news about the Mac client and the Powerplay beta. Originally the beta was scheduled for May 19th, but Frontier has delayed it, which will also delay the full release.

The Mac client is now live, and Frontier says that if you already own Elite: Dangerous, you’re entitled to a Mac copy at no extra charge. Producer Michael Brookes notes that Mac development has benefitted the PC client as well, with optimizations that work across both platforms and which will be included in the Powerplay update. You can read more via Brookes’ forum post.

Akaname LordOfBread You are wasting your time trying to engage with Mr Bread. He’s a troll that thinks because it a rival game to Star Citizen that it must be bad mouthed at every opportunity. He hates it that despite his best efforts there are hundreds of thousands of players who are playing the game and enjoying it.

He doesn’t seem to realise that most elite backers also backed Star Citizen and that they’ll be playing both games but I think his insecurity is getting the better of him. He obviously doesn’t know or care about the future Elite expansions to include the FPS walking round ships, the planetary landings or the big bad thargoids hiding in the shadows (that’s very appropriate for a B5 fan).

I find the funding model which is SC using almost offensive but you don’t find me spamming the SC articles at all. I’m afraid he’s the Elite: Dangerous Troll who’s lost the argument so many times he’s like a broken record (oops need to be more modern) or Scratched CD, (Damn, still last century) or even a corrupt download. (There’s at least I’m almost up to date).

It really makes me wish there was an ignore function in livefyre because it gives me a headache trying to think down to his level!

Whether something has been done before or not doesn’t matter,
it’s how it is presented in the current iteration that’s important.
Virtually everything in games has been done before to one degree or
another, presenting it in new ways and with relevance to the game is
what makes it interesting.
The difference here is that instead of
it only being a one way system, as in you gain rep for tasks and that
opens up a better avenue of influence and rewards – you can also reduce
rep for other factions, thus you can reduce how successful other players
are in the game. With some of the more represented factions this should
open up quite a bit of emergent gameplay.I’d be inclined to see how it works in practice before making a blanket judgement of the system.

I’ve read the infos hoping for anything that could get me mildly interested but this update is about doing exactly the same stuff everyone did before, with ‘Powerplay’ (another marketing masterpiece term) you do it for a still picture of an avatar and you can shift the balance of power between soulless NPC factions that only differ by their text entries and a paragraph of background ‘story’. But wait, there is more: It’s also a reputation points grind and your rewards are… wait for it…lower prices. Yes, this game is actually up for sale at the same price as GTA Online.

When everyone is surprised by the general lack of SC bashing in the SC news articles, I tell them to go to the ED news article posts if they want to read up on that.

On a topical note, I wonder why they aren’t releasing the PC optimizations as a mini-patch vs tying the wait into the “Power Play” patch which could be delayed again and again.

Also help me wrap my head around what power play is.  From my understanding every time a player does a factional quest the results directly affect the factional balance.  If a player openly engages a factional’s military forces then the balance will also shift? Is that the general idea?

if SC had launched with a miserable puny feature set like ED, skipping all work on single player campaign, avatars, hangars to walk around, story, dialogue, NPC AI, character customization, a complete tactical FPS, shops, planetary environments I wonder which one would be the “clear winner”. ED is an empty tin can, you can count this game’s features with three fingers. People who don’t grasp the gargantuan difference of the effort to release SC are quite ignorant.
