Landmark dev: Dungeoneering will become a large part of the game

Landmark is a sandbox MMO that allows players to engage in a number of non-combat activities, but playing as a pure pacifist might be difficult — especially if you like to explore the game’s world.

Daybreak developer Deletionist said on the forums that players should brace themselves for a greater focus on dungeon content in the future: “We don’t really want to change the fundamental way exploration works right now, outside of better combat and better caves (more connected networks, less reliance on pulverizing around to find caverns, etc), but in the future we do want to make dungeon mastering a large component of the game, and dungeons will require combat.”

Deletionist said that the team is working on incentives to encourage explorers and builders to dive into Landmark’s dungeons. He also reassured fans that “this doesn’t mean [Daybreak wants] to remove pure exploration.”

Krem I have to say “its just you”
They havent dropped EQnext and the players of landmark are busy complaining that everyone is working on EQNext and not landmark. If you ask me these gaming houses introduce these games far too early now. Were not accustomed to testing games for 1 – 3 years before release.

zoward melissamcdon I can well imagine why theyre sitting on it. The information that they have given us has left no doubt that the mechanics of this game will be truly next gen. if this is so I wouldnt give anything away too early either. Were not the only ones watching. Their competition is as well and some of them have very deep pockets.

I think what I’m reading here is fairly universal. Where I do believe there a number of players willing to play Landmark for what it is, there are many, many more that, I feel, were led to believe that Landmark was somehow the foundation of what EQ Next would become.

All we are seeing now with EQ N workshops are plans. We are seeing drawings after how many years that this mmo has been “in development”. How many actual restarts have the team actually done on EQ Next? I have said this before, I’m rather tired of wishing and hoping on this mmo. Show me a world Daybreak not an artists’ conceptual idea of what will be “in the future”. This workshop/roundtable stuff has been going on now since the end of 2013. Still we actually know next to nothing about a real living, breath world called Norrath. I don’t think I want to hear or see another drawing of what the team “hopes” will become a reality some day.

If there is not enough actual assets to shows us, then damn it, TELL US! Why try honesty. If the team has had to once again start over on the design process, then for the love of all that’s compassionate, TELL US. What is wrong with being truly honest and open. As far as I’m concerned Daybreak has Landmark and that’s basically it, folks. EverQuest: Next for me is just a, no pun intended, fantasy!

McSleaz mbbrazen I am very glad Landmark is finally fleshing out as more than just a building game.  I understand people have preferences, but I find it disappointing that the masses cry out for more features that prove Landmark will be an MMO, and when that happens then come the complaints of more features ruining a building game.  It was never meant at any time to just be a building game.

Is it remotely possible the community artists in Landmark have so “shown up” the paid devs in EQN that it’s caused the entire project to be set back as they learn what the community has taught them?
It was no secret the first month of Alpha pretty much blew the dev’s minds as they were taught about negative voxels, weird stuff they didn’t even know existed.   And it’s no secret that there is some amazing building being done in Landmark.
Maybe there’s a building learning curve that the EQN team did not realize existed until they were taken to school by the player community…
