The World of Warcraft selfie scavenger hunt is on

You laughed when they brought the selfie camera to World of Warcraft. You rolled your eyes at friends who spammed your Twitter feed with hundreds of headshots. But that this frivolity may actually net you real-world rewards, you’re taking it seriously, aren’t you?

The World of Warcraft selfie scavenger hunt has begun, with Blizzard hosting a multi-week challenge for players to find locations from the studio’s own selfies and submit their own in the same place. Every week the studio is giving away gear, balance codes, and an iPhone 6, and at the end of it all Blizzard will reward a player with a trip for two to BlizzCon.

The contest is very tongue-in-cheek, of course, and you might get a chuckle or two from the contest video after the break.

Do you remember when I claimed that WoW appeared to be staffed by almost entirely shy extroverted players? The kind that still absolutely rquire large group interactions to continue functioning, but were a touch too neurotic to get it by going outdoors too often?
Yep.
No introvert with an ounce of self respect would go near anything to do with selfies. In fact, I’ve seen articles written by introverts who see selfies and selfie-sticks as a sign of the decline of our civilisation. That we reached our peak a little while ago and we’re now in a rapid freefall decline.
Sigh. Selfies. Really, why do they exist? Why do we have to be so narcissistic? I can understand romantic beach photos or such for memories, but selfies?
WoW’s going to have a Hot or Not feature, next.
Christ on a bike.
I like MMOs, sometimes, but I often wish WoW wasn’t one. :P

This game was originally run by players across a number of servers back in Vanilla days, post a screenshot of a location, first person to post a screenie in the same place wins and posts the next location to find.  10 years later Blizzard realises player generated content might be better than their own shit ideas.

I guess this is what happens when an outdated game has done everything within the confines of it’s setting and tech but remains popular.

I can forgive the occasional selfie, but I cannot in any way ever forgive the obscenity that is the ‘selfie stick.’

Forsaken get an unfair advantage as they can detach one of their own arms to use as an extended selfie stick.

wolfyseyes I love CarBot Animation’s videos! They started off doing fan videos for StarCraft but due to their popularity, were eventually hired by Blizzard to do official promotional videos. They do a really good job of capturing all the stupid things players do, and have to do, in Blizzard’s games. My favorite is a good representation of early questing in Warcraft:

While it’s not the kind of thing that has me ready to resub,  props for giving people something else to do at endgame, I guess.

” The contest is very tongue-in-cheek, of course, and you might get a chuckle or two from the contest video after the break.”

My prediction is that 90% of the comments here won’t acknowledge that this contest is meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Get ready for some fun ones!

Watching that video was like the one time I was watching a Real Housewives episode….I could feel myself getting progressively stupider, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away.
