Crossout gives you the freedom to mix-and-match death machines

Remember how hot the vehicular combat genre used to be, especially in the ’90s with titles like Twisted Metal? Apart from the short-lived Auto Assault, we haven’t seen a big resurrection of this type of gameplay in the MMO space. However, that could be due for a change with the debut of Crossout by Gaijin Entertainment, the same studio behind War Thunder.

Crossout is a post-apocalyptic driving game where players create their own death machines and then attempt to shoot, ram, run over, and blow up the competition. It looks to be primarily a PvP title that includes “thousands” of vehicle builds, with parts like chainsaws, anti-gravity lifts, drones, and machine guns. The studio promises that players will be able to glory in the wreckage thanks to a damage model that not only shows the impact but affects the vehicle’s performance.

Currently the title is taking sign-ups on the website for those interested in participating in a future beta program.

Hmm, i was a big fan of Steve Jackson’s Car Wars in the 80s (hight of the Mad Max genre movies) so I’ll definitely take a look at this.

eLdritchMD Nordavind I know, but AA had a TCG tied to it (win TCG tournaments and you got things like hood ornaments in the MMO). I never played the MMO, but it was a damn fine TCG. SOE bought the company that delivered the TCG.

Any mention of AA reminds me of the TCG :)

Slaphammer Autoduel was a great game.  For a very short period of time, archive.org had it on their browser-emu list.  It’s since been removed.  I’d actually pay for a reboot of that game.  SJ Games is still around, even.  Many, many fond memories of figuring out which Albert’s catalog I needed to find to get that one accessory I was looking for.  Had boxes of CW stuff.  Always looked forward to Open Duel night at the arena (playing with the gang after school on Fridays).
It’s practically a game designed for blended lobby/persistent world.

Nordavind eLdritchMD Auto Assault just didn’t capture the same flare, although they did try.

tank combat? Got that.
airplane combat? Got that.
warship combat? Got that.
spaceship combat? Got that.
car combat? Huh, don’t got that one yet.

Welp, guess I’ll keep a lookout for Crossout then.
