The Daily Grind: If it were 2003 again, which MMO would you play?

235

Fun hypothetical: Let’s say that all of us — including Massively Overpowered — were thrown back in time 12 years to 2003. There’s no World of Warcraft. No Star Wars: The Old Republic. And very, very little free-to-play anything.

What would you play?

Would you get into the truly classic era of EverQuest? Go PvPing in Dark Age of Camelot? Build a house in Ultima Online? Get in on the ground floor of EVE Online? Rejoice that Star Wars Galaxies was back? Or something else entirely?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Estranged GoJammit LOL! Well come on. They were just idiots. Wow had some of that too. My time was too limited to bother with spawn rates and stuff so I just accepted that would be locked away from me. Same pretty much for raiding.

This is a tossup. If ic ould drop all my knowledge of MMOs I’d probably go everquest. I’ve always wanted to play everquest when it was the thing. Playing it now I can’t get into it.

FFXI.
As a matter of fact, had FFXIV not been announced, I’d have never stopped playing it.

I’d probably find all the games undesirable in 2003 after accumulated my taste throughout the years.  I would not play 2003’s Eve Online because it was pretty crappy compare to the version I actually played.

GoJammit that was a year later. CoH and WoW had a lot more story and lot less grind, but previous games were very grindy. But my memory is suspect as I didn’t start until CoH. The grind was my perception, though.

I had not yet started playing MMOs in 2003, I was waiting patiently for City of Heroes. But if I had to do it over again, I’d have gotten into EverQuest when it launched.

I never felt like I was grinding I either CoH or Earth and Beyond. Maybe FFXI was but I don’t remember.

Even in all my Sony fandom I new my Dreamcast had it beat. Why oh why didn’t they just put a dvr’d drive in that thing. So many people holding off to buy it because of that stupid drive. The first two play stations owe their success to crappy decision making. First by Nintendo and then by Sega. And then that was the end of Sefa hardware for food.
