PvE sandbox Villagers and Heroes is reborn tomorrow

When I last checked in on indie PvE sandbox Villagers and Heroes a year ago, the Steam launch was busy rocking the game with dramatic changes that sent a lot of veteran players running for the hills. Even back then, developer Mad Otter was discussing a revamp of the game to nuke the controversial energy mechanic that propelled the game’s crafting (and its cash shop). That revamp is finally here and is just one part of the expansion/reboot (expanshaboot?) that lands tomorrow; Mad Otter calls it an “an all-new gathering supply system that completely replaces the unpopular energy/Vim system formerly featured in the game.”

There’s also a new mystery plotline, new voice acting and music, new character customization tools (including origin stories and personality types), a new respec system, and a massive “graphical facelift” for the UI, models, and textures. The game is F2P on Steam, so there’s little excuse not to take a peek.

MesaSage Thanks for the tips.  I checked in again on my 2011 account a couple of nights ago, but did add a new character and really like the tutorial they created, if the opening questline is what you are referring to..  I’m not sure about the whole distracting gnomeneering thing for brand new players, but maybe it was just a side-feature of the town I started in.

Wow, so I see my comment got featured.  After checking out the Reborn update, I have to advise not skipping the tutorial.  They’ve added a bunch of new starter zones and made it more important to the new game experience.  It’s much harder to find your way to Ardent now without learning a few things first.  Also, they finally moved Maiden away from Ardent, so you can no longer portal directly from the City.  (You can run there, but it’s a long run and you’ll get killed a few times on the way) I still recommend the part about getting your house immediately upon entering Ardent City and finding an active village.

CistaCista ChristopherPierce Dystopiq I like to play some PvP sandboxes as if they are PvE. Every time I go back to EVE I attempt that.

Had a lot of fun with this in the opening days.  Last I logged in they had cluttered up and made some changes to the main city (possibly around a holiday), but I’m definitely into revisiting to see what direction they are headed in.

CistaCista wjowski Sandbox arguments are as impossible as P2W arguments, it’s all subjective and gets whittled down to semantics. No one ever wins lol.

Protip: Skip the tutorial and head directly for Ardent.  When you get through the portal, speak to the housing quest person and take the quest.  Jump into one of the more populated/advanced villages (unless you really love grind, there are huge advantages to established villages) and claim your land.  Go back to Ardent and jump the portal to Maiden.  Maiden is way overlevel but just don’t leave the platform area.  Take the Quest on the upper platform that’s basically a runaround quest on the platform.  There might be another short quest there, too.  Check them all, and just don’t do the combat because you’ll die. These quests will give you enough XP to get somewhere between level 7 to 9 (I think) in just a few minutes.  You’ll also get enough money to start your gardening/ranching.  Now you just need to find some gear for your new levels and you’re ready to take on Lady’s Lake and Elk Meadow.

Looks adorable, right up my alley. I have no time to play this, but yes F2P I don’t have much of an excuse to not give a smidge of a chance.
