The Daily Grind: Have bugs ever killed your enthusiasm for an MMO?

Does this happen in the game? I seriously don't know.

With a sale on Steam and a bit of curiosity, I decided that I would pick up and play some Fallout 3 over the weekend. Unfortunately, the description of the game didn’t include the important bit of information that the game will randomly crash on a regular basis, meaning that of my playtime in the game thus far, I’d estimate that at least half of it has been erased by the game crashing. Over and over. With no regard for what I’m doing.

I’m well aware the game isn’t an MMO (there are several signs, like the fact that it’s offline), but even so, I know there are people who have had technical issues so severe that games have been written off not for game mechanics but for simple unplayability. Has this happened to you? Have your attempts to play an MMO been met with so many crashes and bugs that playing became too irritating to continue?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Akami Well if the version we get is anything like the Taiwan version it’s actually pretty good. The only reason I stopped playing was because I was put off on questing and not knowing why I am doing something or any of the story really. The only other thing I can complain about with the game is the insane amounts of boob jiggle (seriously, it’s like they have two sacks of water stapled to their chest and not boobs).

Crow God Akami Zero plans to play B&S.  Pretty much done with eastern MMO’s at this point.  I firmly believe that either they don’t have a clue what the western audience will and will not put up with, or they just don’t care.

It depends. If they are bugs on my end, such as client crashes, I tend to be fairly forgiving; if they are server-side bugs and crashes, though, it will likely keep me away from the game, if not permanently, at least for a few months.

Part of why I tend to avoid the launch week (and, if I hear about launch issues, the launch month) of any MMO I intend to play.

BTW, Bethesda is known for making fantastically engaging, but bugged, games. If you want a bug-free experience, Bethesda shouldn’t be your studio of choice. Also, with any of their games, look for community-created patches fixing many of the left over bugs.

WAR for bugs. I wasn’t overly bothered by most of the bugs in WAR (and there were a
fair number), but one that did irritate me was one that made an extra
lifetap trigger every second for the melee healers as long as someone
was in range. It went off even if the melee healer was facing the other
direction, behind a door, CC’d, or even dead (sometimes). The number of
times I relogged when it got stuck on me was infuriating….and it was
reported multiple times for over 3 years.
For crashes….I had to ditch a spec in RIFT at release because I made a Cabalst / Justicar build and hit 8 targets 8 times each, healing 10 people for each hit that I crashed myself after a few seconds of doing AoE in a raid.

The last time I played Fallout 3 there was a sticky thread right at the top of the steam forums telling you the couple of simple .ini changes to make the game stable. Once done, crashing is very very rare.

Dystopiq agemyth wild_abyss Xomon So…gonna have to buy that Win10 Upgrade Pack if you want to play it? (I would not put it past them to do something that shady.)

Tandor Shadewalker Xomon I can think of a few. Gigantic, Overwatch, Fable Legends, pretty sure Battlecry, Battleborn, and Fortnite are gonna be Win10 too. Lot of future games looking to capitalize on DX12.
Personally, I rather wait till at least the second or third build. (Which would probably be three months in, maybe four.)

Akami Well…in that case…unless NC Soft pre-emptively sets up a system to deal with bots, I don’t recommend you play Blade & Soul. Was on the Taiwan version and holy shit the number of Destroyer bots…

fakepants I’m hoping VATS put you in a slowmo-mode that lets you aim and choose targets a la Red Dead Redemption while still maintaining the hit chance system (this way it doesn’t automatically aim for you, so you can’t use it to line up a perfect headshot). Probably have AP used up the longer you’re in VATS mode as well as a percentage used up for each time you target an enemy.

Fallout 3 crashing? No, way, Fallout 3, nor any game using Gamebryo, have ever crashed…
But all seriousness. Good thing FO4 is using Creation Engine. That thing crashes a lot too but no where near as much as Oblivion or FO3.
