H1Z1 aims for a ‘massive world,’ adds team members and resources

Daybreak Game Company isn’t pulling back on H1Z1’s development, but is instead doubling down on the survival zombie sandbox by adding more team members and resources to build what President John Smedley calls “a massive world.”

Smedley posted an update of H1Z1’s future development on Reddit today, listing several features that will be coming down the pike. These include guard towers, machine gun emplacements, a streamlined building process, professions, and smarter zombie AI. He also hinted at an announcement concerning the Battle Royale team later in June.

“Our goal remains to have a massive world,” Smedley said. “We’re doing that with Forgelight 2, which has been in development for quite a while now. We’ll be able to show stuff to you soon, but needless to say we’re super excited by what we’re seeing.”

Same here.  Smed has told me his last lie that I’ll pay the slightest attention to.

SoMuchMass i must have missed the ‘new twists’ that come with Ark – can you elaborate? I saw zombies exchanged for dinosaurs in an unoptimized client.

It’s funny that since January H1Z1 went from being all about survival, to be all about small scale death matches, even adding CoD like tactical costumes over stuff that’s more survival setting friendly.  Then suddenly after ARK early access comes out, jumps straight to the top of best seller list, gets a bunch of positive spin going for it, and steals the wind from H1Z1’s sails; and now suddenly Smed and company want H1Z1 to go back to being all about survival again….
Sorry Smed, but you had 6 months to show your survival players who purchased EA how serious you were about making a game for them!  Don’t go changing your tune now, just because they’ve all started jumping ship.  You’re just going to end up ticking off the pew pew pew crowd you were coveting and catering to the past few months.

After watching people stream and play Ark it is amazing to me that all these seasoned developers couldn’t come up with better ideas than literally ripping off DayZ.  They have all become complacent and don’t want to try anything remotely new.  Just look at Ark, it takes the survival concept and puts some new twists to it.  Why couldn’t Daybreak/SOE do something like that?  Same thing with Trion, instead of ripping of other games with Trove, why not do something new?
On the bright side, I see an adjustment in the market coming.  Where companies that clone and copy other games will fall and companies that try different things will succeed.  I don’t see a bright future for DayBreak or Trion.
