The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite unusual MMO weapon?

115

Maybe I’ve been around for a little too long and have become jaded at the same-old weapons that we see in every MMO, but I will jump up and shout praises out of the window of my house if I get to try out something unusual in a game.

While I never stuck with WildStar’s Medic for terribly long, I did appreciate the strange dual resonators that the class used. My Guild Wars Reaver had a wicked-looking scythe that was pretty cheeky, and I’ll forever be fond of my repeating crossbow in Dungeons and Dragons Online for its fft-fft-fft-fft rapid fire attacks.

So what unusual weapons have you enjoyed in MMOs? What would you like to see more of in the future?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Werewolf Finds Dragon  “I’d probably prefer to just have a giant shield and no weapon.”
In CoH you could pick a shield defense set along with any of a number of unarmed offensive sets.  That’s right, I’ll take any chance I get to mention CoH!

Superpowers, when I can have them and they actually feel like such. I often go with something that seems like it wouldn’t be lethal. When I can’t have that? Sci-fi ranged guns that seem like they’d be able to stun. And when that fails? Magic that appears to do similar. Failing that? A bow, since at least there I can make a clean, surgical strike.
I will opt for melee, sometimes, but only when I’m in a protector role. More to draw attention and to hold it than actually do the harming, which is why sometimes I’d probably prefer to just have a giant shield and no weapon. That’d make for an interesting class.

No bashing me now…..but I really liked the Whipper from Scarlet Blade. While the characters were all eye candy – the whipper was quite fun to play. Think of a greatsword that was built like a very flexible human spine. Each vertebrae being razor spikey things. When you swing it – it is highly elastic and stretches way out like a whip! Spinning moves made it a great AOE weapon.

ManastuUtakata I miss when we still had support classes.  Bard is always one of my favorite archetypes, but no one makes them anymore because they don’t fit the Trinity

BryanCo When CoH shut down I recreated my Rosie the Riveter character in The Secret World — you can have a wrench as a weapon in both games.

The weapons skins for CoH including some oddities such as pipe wrenches (mace) and shovels (axe,) but my favorite for just plain awesome weirdness is this little number for the Titan Weapon powerset:

A little OT: Does any MMO actually have a whip weapon with a cool attack animation?  I was all excited to have one back in EQ2 and then I found out how lame it looks in combat (not to mention when you carry it… it’s a wiggly worm).  Instead of being threatening or, dare I say, naught, it just made me laugh.

I always loved the extendable melee weapons in Aion, it actually gave those of us who didn’t have <100ms ping able to hit opponents that we were standing right next to while mashing an attack button.
