Aventurine offers to license out classic Darkfall’s game code

The drama over the proposed Darkfall classic server continued this weekend. Aventurine CEO Zad Mehdawi removed his original post on the subject, saying that it was not “approved for posting” and put up an amended one hinting that the company wouldn’t be averse to handing off the project to a third party.

Mehdawi briefly lists why a classic server will not help the company: “Bringing back the original Darkfall is unfortunately unrealistic and impractical. There is no doubt that it was a great game, which had its chance but unfortunately stopped being viable and had to end.”

He did go on to suggest that another studio could pick up the ball, provided that it had the resources to handle the project: “We remain open to serious proposals for licensing and supporting the original Darkfall. […] It would take a sizeable server investment to cover a region and a minimum low five figure amount just for bandwidth and basic systems operations.”

I think if somebody took this and made it a little less hardcore (maybe faction only pvp, less item loss in death or something of that nature), it could be successful.  The game was very immersive, great world creation, combat was actually fun.  It’s just the constant ganking made it too much for me.  Faction only or guild vs. guild only could help a lot on the random ganking.  PVE only would be a bit too far, I think, but maybe something to make PVP more consensual could work.

Just say no to classic servers and move on.  No sense in letting someone else take what little player base you have away.

If they were smart they would partner up with a game server host and rent out smaller capacity servers. Give some control over aspects of the game to the server owners. I bet they could make a pretty penny. Besides 5 figures for server hosting, that number seems a bit high.

Kempomeester He isn’t talking about selling the rights to DFO, just a license to run it on a server. So I don’t see it going open source ,even if they actually do sell someone a license (which it doesn’t sound like they really intent to do, just PR trying to calm the player base).

This is the right direction to go with this. It doesn’t make financial sense for Adventurine to invest in maintaining two versions of Darkfall and continue to develop for one of them. If enough players truly want old Darkfall back, they now have a legal path to bring it back and don’t have to go through the trouble of packet sniffing and emulating it poorly for years :P

Fucking hell man if So, if I was a lottery winner i’d buy it instantly.
Maybe we should try and get a kickstarter going to buy the license as a collective
then when we have the rights
Rerelease it under GNU GPL version 3* making it opensource and available to everyone willing to work on it. The essence of this is that we create our own Darkfall.
As you can see i’m quite dedicated to playing this game (I haven’t ever)

deekay_zero Definitely agree that this is something studios should do more.  I’d still love to see NCSoft license out the CoH codebase, simply because it seems obvious that someone would pick it up
