E3 2015: The Division’s beta happens this winter, release in March [Updated]

Which is good, because we have to justify that Xbox One purchase somehow.

If you’re itching to beta test The Division, I hope you have Microsoft’s latest console. Ubisoft announced that Xbox One owners will get an advance look at the shooter in December. Spokesman Laurent Detoc spilled the beans at today’s Microsoft E3 presentation, but Ubisoft has not said whether or not the beta will be open nor has it provided information on how to sign up.

The Division was initially mentioned as a console exclusive in 2013. Later that same year, Ubisoft said that it would also release the game on PCs due to the platform’s vocal community.

[Update]: Ubisoft announced that The Division will release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on March 8, 2016.

I had the same mindset as well. I was intrigued right up until the LZ bit.
I need to hear or read more about how long of a leash they’ll give this type of playstyle.

DugFromTheEarth That was just the zone they were showing off. That will be the only area of the game that will allow friendly players to do that. Which is kind of dumb, since if anyone’s friend does that to their group of friends, looks like someone isn’t going to get a party invite from the group next time.

Yeh I got the same impression that there is a lot more to the game PvE wise and it was more to demonstrate how this “Dark Zone” PvP area will operate. Then again they haven’t released many details.
I’d like it if when you scan someone and the HUD displays information if they are a prolific player killer it gives some sort of warning icon. Sort of watch your back heads up.
I also think they wanted to demonstrate how it seems like a “seamless” world going from PvE instance to PvP instance just by climbing the wall. It didn’t seem like there was a transition/load screen.

I’ll be playing with friends to start so hopefully they won’t shoot me int he back and steal my gear.

Do keep in mind that this was just in one area of the game world. The whole game isn’t one giant free-for-all. They even said that during the introduction, iirc…

DugFromTheEarth I hear you.  That video was designed to entice the PvPers, but it soured my opinion of the game as well.  I’ll continue to tune in for more news–it’s just one video, after all–but if this is what we can expect, then Ubisoft saved me $60.00.

DugFromTheEarth I don’t disagree with what you have to say, but my impression of the video the third guy(Brian?), possibly a pug, dropped group and gave the other two a dose of their own medicine after they made the call to kill the other friendly team. So, don’t see his actions being jerkish if I followed the video correctly. The other two got what they deserved.

But, at best, this will be a 75% off title for me if anything, because I do get the gankfest vibe from it.

After seeing the ubisoft preview of the game, my excitement for the game has gone from a 9 out of 10, to about a 2.

This game seems basically like DayZ, without the zombies. A buddy of mine calls games like this JvJ (instead of pvp), for jerk vs jerk. I just dont understand the draw or lure or fun of a game where anyone, any time, can just kill everyone else, for any reason. In the trailer, not only does a team wipe out a non hostile team that helped them, but then a member of that jerk team, leaves the team, and kills his own ex-teammates.

Seems like if your goal and fun doesnt come from finding ways to pretty much kill everyone you come across, games like this wont really offer more than frustration.

Sorry Ubisoft, but unless you have some very unique server rulesets to help tone down the level of “dick move” freedom, I wont be supporting this with my wallet.

That game was supposed to launch months ago, and now the beta is only coming this winter?

Well, GW2 had an across-the-boards revamp years into its development and it made it through, but this still smells bad.  I hope my internal alarm is wrong on this one, but it’s been going off for months now.

This is still a thing?  I thought it was becoming vaporware like The Agency?
