SWTOR lead writer talks expansion story and companions

If you’re curious about the story coming your way in BioWare’s next Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion, you should probably read a post on the game’s official forums that was penned by lead writer Charles Boyd. It steers clear of spoilers, but it also hints at a few things that story fans might want to know.

“The choices you’ve made, romances you’ve pursued, your class, etc., are all a part of who your character is, and those decisions will be honored in Knights of the Fallen Empire; often in unexpected ways,” Boyd says. He also mentions companions, saying that “there’s a ton of stuff going on with companions in this release.” While he avoids specifics, Boyd explains that past companions will return, sometimes as “very critical” parts of the overall story shared by all Outlanders.

I am just hoping they’ll re-work the antiquated concept of discrete, fixed ‘servers’ as part of this re-work. Create PVP open planets with quests, but otherwise keep core areas PVE, and let an additional instanced planet be RP tagged. With separate PVE, PVP, RP-PVE, and RP-PVP, I feel like the community is too divided. As far as I’m seeing, all new games are going in a different direction that allows more flexibility in this regard.

Seeing how they forced PVE in the Ziost area, even on the PVP servers, this seems to be the way they’re going.

I have friends on other servers, and I have friends on my current server. The vocal guild leaders on the small servers are going to say, ‘everything is fine,’ and they’re the squeaky wheel, but how many people just stopped playing because of it? I’m on the verge of doing that.

I just really hope they revisit this obsolete fixed server system.

Looks like Bioware has finally wised up to what made SWTOR great initially.  Rise of the Hutt Cartel felt unfinished, since they (apparently) rushed it out the door when the subs started tanking.  Galactic Starfighter only catered to the small crowd who wanted pvp space combat.  Shadow of Revan took a positive step forward, though it still was rather thin on class story.

I may actually resub for this expansion.  After I get more details on it though. :)

I am looking forward to the new companions and story, These are the things that make this game great. I wish they would make a 60+ class where you can be HK-47 or a IG-88 type charter. Kind of like what WOW did with the Death Knight.

Maelzrael Sutter Cane snuffdigit Marketing.  The hype dies if you lay it all out.  Plus, better to not indulge until a feature is set in stone.

So hey, those companions you’ve been gearing up and playing with…sorry/not sorry…they’re gone. You’ll get new ones though so it’s all good.
