Star Trek Online’s newest feature episode awaits, according to an official tweet this morning that signified the end of the patch maintenance period. Cryptic has also published a blog post on the new Time in a Bottle episode, with systems designer Jon Steady writing about weekly rewards like the Chroniton Split Beam Rifle. It deals anti-proton damage, “with a chance to reduce run speed and target power recharge speed,” he says.

That’s great that they’ve returned to doing the Featured Episodes on a regular basis. Now that at least is news worthy. I wonder why MOP hasn’t done a story on that?

Peregrine_Falcon They’ve been adding one new mission every three weeks now since around February; and Salami Inferno stated it was something they plan to continue doing for the foreseeable future.  Plus the new episodes have been pretty involved and featured VO from many former Star Trek actors.

IMO it’s an attempt to return to the weekly FE paradigm to a degree but the ‘special rewards’ once a week for the first 3 weeks is to keep players interested until the next one comes out. Salami stated it works for them, and the reason they can’t do ‘one a week’ like before when FE’s were ‘the thing’ was that the team can’t maintain that pace; but the pace they’re on is doable so they’ll keep doing it. personally, I’ve found the new episodes to be generally well done and entertaining, and it does feel like there’s some ‘Prime Universe’ Star trek stories to enjoy again. YMMV.

The revised launch structure of a new episode on a monthly schedule is designed to drive the narrative.  Another major change is the level needed to access these new missions – no longer are they limited to to lvl 50 players. Its part of a fairly well-written narrative arc that’s been 5 years in the making.

As a long-term player we look forward to these episodes, and you’re right from an outsider looking in, it’s hard not to say ‘whats the big deal?  how is this news?’  One interesting change to the release of these episodes are some fairly interesting unique item rewards offered each week for 3 weeks following the release of the episode.  With options for weapons upgrades and specialization point as account bonus rewards  these missions are designed to entice new players as well us us jaded lifers.

The added bonus of bringing back VO talent from the series just make them ‘that much cooler’ for Star Trek fans.  While I was never a fan of the Ferengi (the aborted ‘bad guys’ from Next Gen), having https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aron_Eisenberg reprise his role was very cool.

They’ve been adding new missions every three weeks? Or they just happened to add another mission three weeks ago?

Peregrine_Falcon It’s a fun story mission and it gives you a Ferengi duty officer that can generate latinum. Damn fine addition so far.

Take your pick:
Lately it’s been one every three weeks, not six months;

They’ve been on a roll with recruiting actors from the shows to reprise their roles;

The current series of episodes is the culmination of a story that has been building since launch, despite the interruptions from financial disaster, sale of the company, extended hibernation in maintenance mode, and an unlikely resurrection that began with the Romulus expansion.

Yes the missions in STO generally take between 20 – 40 minutes to complete and are more than a “Kill 10 Rats” quest. But this still just one mission. Other MMO’s routinely add dozens of missions to their game and it isn’t considered news worthy, so why is it news worthy when STO adds just one mission every six months or so?

Peregrine_Falcon To be fair, a whole mission in STO requires much more than a standard kill quest in most MMOs. Not only do they often create whole new maps (not always) but the do a bit of VO work too. And that VO is often voiced by an actor from the actual series. I suppose that is good enough reason for massively to make mention of it, not like they wrote an entire article on it.

They added one whole mission to Star Trek Online?
Why is this worth a news article again?  O.o
