The Daily Grind: Would you play a Marvel Heroes clone?

158

It seems like at least half of the Massively Overpowered staff is obsessed with Marvel Heroes. I’ve played it a fair amount too, and I keep logging into it every day even though I no longer play it because of some silly need to get the various login rewards.

What I’d prefer, though, is either for Disney to make Star Wars Heroes or Warner Bros. to make DC Heroes while keeping the mechanics intact and replacing an IP that I don’t really care about with an IP that I do care about.

What about you, MOP readers? Would you play a Marvel Heroes clone, if there was such a thing? Why or why not?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

To answer you question, Jef: No, I wouldn’t. However, if they ditched the “god mode” view and made it a first person game then maybe I would.

Just to explain what I mean, I’ll take an example from the now cancelled Infinite Crisis game —

The teaser trailer looks great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp5XAzamk1o
But the gameplay is just lame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke0Rmpi-6jg

It’s the same with this game (and any clones) — as long as the gameplay is a three-quarter view 3rd person “god mode” it’s totally uninteresting to me, regardless of its contents or features. However, if the gameplay was like in the CGI teaser trailer for Infinite Crisis (above) then I’d probably be playing.

For the next decade, the only Star Wars games Disney can make are for mobile, so I doubt there is much interest for that here.

EA did announce Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes at E3 so along with Heros of the Storm, hero seem popular in titles recently.

I’ve read, watched and gamed Star Wars for years and even I recognize that’s a relatively weak IP besides a few iconic characters or settings. I just don’t see it being that good, but it would be financially viable simply due to the masses.

SixSixTrample blast tyrant I think the issue with looks is down to the licence agreement.  Every costume released has to be run by Marvel for approval before its released.  Now if each individual piece of armour changed the look of the hero then they would need to run all those pieces /  combinations by Marvel too.  Gven how many heroes there are that would quickly bog things down I imagine.
That said I agree some of the heroes do need some more costume love and it would be great if they all had as many options as Iron Man /sigh

If it has an interesting concept or niche and a fair business model/entry price, I’ll give any ARPG a whirl.

breetoplay I’m hoping the future CoH spiritual successors look to MH for inspiration on another way to portray powers. MH doesn’t have a whole lot of powers like CoH had and vice versa so my eyes were opened to so many more possibilities for graphics goodness. A few examples of where I just get giddy seeing the powers in MH are Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Warp, Ghost Rider’s Ride and Cyclop’s Visor Off. Just so many well done powers that I don’t want to see a Rain of Fire unless it bubbles the surface it is on or shows a fiery demon cloud spewing out the droplets of death.

I much prefer the Marvel IP to DC or Star Wars, so… not really. There’s a lot of good to M:H, but a lot I don’t care for too. I’d rather play something with a story, to be honest.

Nope. When I play MH I’m constantly disappointed that it’s not a 3rd person open world mmo with awesome dynamic events. Instead it’s an isometric click fest I can really only stomach for 20-30 min…
