WRUP: Early access maybe edition

You're a liar, Future Me! A wonderful liar.

This week, no one will exactly be surprised to learn that I’m playing Final Fantasy XIV‘s early access weekend. Or trying to, anyway, because while the servers are nice and stable and the content seems largely free of bugs, you’re going to be stuck with some pretty horrendous queues and lobby server errors the moment you try to log back in after you log off for literally anything. Which, you know, isn’t something I’m really going to rake the company over the coals for… but it’s still kind of annoying to sit through.

But enough about me, by which I mean a very small bit more about me and about others. It’s What Are You Playing, wherein we tell you our plans for the weekend (and our Patrons chime in) and you let us know your weekend plans in the comments! And there’s no queue here. There might be login issues, though, depending on how nicely Livefyre is running.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Marvel Heroes for me. I’ve got five characters unlocked now and have been playing obsessively, alternating between Storm, Squirrel Girl, and lately, Invisible Woman, on whom I am not using invisibility, heh. Justin was right; patrolling a zone with other people was the way to go. So many expies!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Oh, come on, the intro made it obvious.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): I’m deep into a nice WildStar groove right now, splitting my time between adventuring in Malgrave and rebuilding my house.

DirtyKlingon (@deekay_zero): Derping around in WildStar as usual and doing some epic hardcore (cupcake) rated battlegrounds. In addition, I’ve got an epic episode of our Dungeons & Dragons western reaches campaign via roll20.net this week, as my entire party almost died (some nearly instantly) and fought to stay alive via 5th Edition’s edge-of-your-seat death saving throw mechanic, while the remainder of our party fought alongside a huge white dragon against a super badwizard! Super exciting times!

Jagmas (@jagmas, blog) It’s kind of a broken record, but Ark is really fun, so when I’m free this weekend I’ll still be playing Ark: Survival Evolved with a smidgen of Shards Online thrown in especially since they’ll have the servers up early for testing the entire weekend.

Your turn!

Enikuo I see that you ran into the AOE-Tards… I went with my Machinist for 10 minutes in Costa Del Sol, and decided to leave. FFXIV devs should nerf the AOE in Fates so that the damage would be zero. One button spam is ridiculous.

KythasWraith karmamule Hah, not really, especially if you spend many hours gaming. It’s like a rabid golfer buying a new set of golf clubs!  :)

EBreezy Noble_Einherjar Wow. This game looks .. very different .. from the last time I played it. When I last played, the graphics were much more basic, and about the only sound effect was the item-discovery jingle from Zelda.

I have yet to find out: I won’t be back in the states for a while longer :/ I can tell you when I find out, however!

Is it sad I am looking forward to slapping those into my computer more than anything else?

KythasWraith karmamule Nice! I can get good 4k performance on just one, so you must have silky smooth framerates!  It was a gorgeous game before, but with DX11 plus new cards it’s an even better treat.

Out of curiosity, in addition to the framerate do you notice that the 980ti seems to handle lighting in general better as well?  I’m trying to figure out if it’s a feature of the card or just a quirk of the particular set-ups I went from/to….

One more HK-47 kill to get the ‘Meatbag’ achievement and title. And then I am never setting foot in those two instances ever, ever again. :)

Enikuo There are a bunch of L46-48 quest chains starting in the Waking Sands. I only found them after I got to 49.

I finished the main 2.0 MSQ in FFXIV! Wow. That actually was quite powerful. Now there’s lots of stuff to do. Lots of Hard Mode trials to enable. The Hildebrand arc to do. That sort of thing.

I am leveling in FFXIV. I’m at in the level 40 Coerthas area. I’m doing fates between story missions to make up the level gaps to the next story quest. There are SO MANY dark knights, machinists, and astrologians running around. It’s a sea of red particle effects, card spells, and little turret thingies.
I’m also spending some time in Marvel Heroes Online. I got my free Baby Groot pet – soooo cute! I had been leveling all the heroes to 10 to try them out, but I’m just working on Squirrel Girl now. She’s level 21 :) And, she has lots of cake from the event.
