Guild Wars 2 adds a canonically transgender NPC

Good plan.

Inclusion has always been a big priority for Guild Wars 2, and that cause has taken another step forward as of yesterday’s patch. A character named Sya is in the game now, and if you talk to her briefly, she reveals that you met her before in the Bloodtide Coast, but she was going by her birth name of Symon at the time. After the attack on Lion’s Arch, she realized that she both needed and wanted to transition.

Sya isn’t a major character and can be missed if you’re not paying attention, but her presence in the game is a deliberate and welcome nod to transgender individuals. It also confirms that transitioning is definitely a thing that happens in Tyria, above and beyond the mechanical side of letting you purchase and use Full Makeover Kits.

Skyewauker Oh enlighten me with your ignorance…. Please tell us why the suicide rate is so high for the LGBT?

Skyewauker DanielCulbertson Craywulf Oh, I believe you when you say you don’t choose the romantic story options in TOR or any other game. What I’m saying, though, is that if all the romantic options in games were heterosexual, you may not *choose* them, but you wouldn’t complain about them being there, either.
It’s only when the conversational options include lgbt characters that it becomes a problem for you. Which is evidenced by how actively you are arguing in a thread about a feature you just admitted that you never use anyway. I mean, seriously, how much can any of this *possibly* affect your gaming experience if you never choose those options anyway?

Craywulf Skyewauker There is a reason that the suicide rate is insanely steep.  Think on it.

DanielCulbertson Skyewauker Craywulf You can say its a load of crap all day long, but its the truth.  In TOR for example, I don’t choose any flirt / relationship options because I don’t run around on the weekends with Gleeb, Glob, and the Froopty Doos.  I just don’t.  I don’t play games to romance NPCs and look at pixelated tits and ass.

Skyewauker Craywulf QUOTE: ” I don’t want any romantic relationships in games.  Its simply not needed.”
What a blatant load of crap. I’ve read through many of your other responses to this article, and it is completely obvious that the only time you would EVER care if there was a romantic relationship in a video game was if it happened to be anything other than heterosexual.
As a heterosexual person, the world has been specifically tailored to you your entire life. You have been catered to and pandered to in every nook and cranny of society and the media for *decades*. You’re so used to being the special privileged snowflake that you can’t imagine a world where your sexuality isn’t the single celebrated norm.
Gays getting up on the lunch table for attention? As if. There’s no room up there. People like you have been hogging it since the dawn of time. Give it a rest. Attention has been paid.

Wonky food is the best food.
Ah, another thing about being autistic, you have strange eating habits that freak the heck out of everyone else. Such as combining marmite with nutella. I’m sorry if I made you gag, okay? Thing is, I celebrate this. Diversity is awesome.

And nor are you morally responsible for telling them what their raison d’etre is.
I mean, really, that’s a narcissistic attitude, isn’t it? It’s up to ArenaNet what they choose to do, and if you had bothered to read the article (and I suspect you did, but you’re just being disingenuous) then you’d know that this was a choice. No one was pressured into this. A transgender employee at ArenaNet created a transgender character, which the rest of ArenaNet was okay with.
That’s not an agenda, to call it so is idiocy.
That’s not a responsibility, to call it so is idiocy.
It’s a choice. To misrepresent it is dishonesty.
So your point, your entire post, is moot.

That’s why I don’t call myself a gamer any more, it disgusts me. I’m a person who plays video games. Besides, I like calling them video games, there’s something ridiculously archaic about it that appeals to me. And I’ll likely be getting on everyone’s nerves by calling them video games when we have fully holographic displays.

@the wanderer

Politicking? Underhanded attempts to get people to agree with you by pretending to be like them? That’s not something that Groo would do or agree with! You really do shame the name.
Yes, it’s an issue for all ages, that is true. That kids wouldn’t appreciate it? Horse. Hockey. And manure.
You’re aware that bullying happens, you’re not that oblivious of a person. It erodes self esteem, it leads to sadness, torture, and even suicide. What we need is to create a culture where ALL young people understand that gender isn’t binary. It creates less of an atmosphere or discrimination, where a child is bullied, beaten, and tortured for being different. Do you have any idea of how many young people have committed suicide over bullying and social pressures, just because they weren’t born the same as every other gestalt drone out there?
This is where my bitter hatred for extroverts comes from, they’ve got their heads so far up some dark hole or other that they don’t realise the harm they’re causing, that or they’re too sociopathic to care.
When you fight things like this? You’re in turn responsible for every young person who commits suicide because they don’t believe they belong in this world. Part of that blame is yours.
Think about that.

Exactly. It’s a method of control, there are those who aren’t very bright who’d prefer the simplicity of the stone age. Some of us are more progressive than that. There’s nothing about gender that we shouldn’t teach to a child, really. In fact, identity is something that we need to be discussing with children more often.
The very fact that there are so many gestalt drones just buzzing around, obeying their alpha males, doing whatever the clique says, buying the popular product and so on is a result of this idiocy. The more children we help to discover their own identity (rather than co-opting one from the hive), the better our species becomes.
