The Daily Grind: What’s the prettiest MMO?

165

Judging video game eye candy is one of the most subjective activities in our hobby, is it not? Everyone has a different standard (and tolerance) for beauty, which can extend to art style, palettes, locales, animation, and lens flares. We know which way J.J. Abrams will vote whenever he sees that last one.

There are a lot of good-looking MMOs on the market right now. I enjoy the colorful zaniness of WildStar, the gorgeous “painterly aesthetic” of Guild Wars 2, and even the old-school talent behind Lord of the Rings Online. But I think that there’s beauty in most online games if you look for it.

So in your opinion, what is the prettiest MMO on the market? Bonus points to your position if you post a screenshot to back it up!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

ShagrathVtc Couldn’t agree more. LOTRO has amazing environments with gorgeous scenery, yet awful character models and animations. It baffles my mind as to how Turbine believed the two could coexist, as they could not be more different in terms of quality. And the beauty of the game world makes the piss-poor character models’ ugliness stick out like a sore thumb!
I’ve said this a few times, but I firmly believe that if Turbine updated the character models and animations to a level on par with the world itself, the game would be a lot more successful that in is. However, as it is now no matter how hard I try to coerce my friends into playing due to the beauty of the game world, they always reply with something along the lines of, “but the character models are so ugly looking I just can’t get past it.”

The Secret World is crazy beautiful, in a creepy way but still it’s amazing looking (as long as you are able to support the higher graphic settings anyway).  It’s been out a while now but is still one of the best looking games there is.

I have to wonder how many people simply think their favorite game is also the prettiest.  Maybe a question that would be easier to answer without bias would be ‘what game has made ya stop and take a screnshot’?

Bereman99 I agree. Atmospheric as all heck. Also one of the best starting zones to just suck you in and make you want more.

ShagrathVtc Yes, I will always take draw distance and open regions over super high res. FFXIV has beautiful character models and everything, but I can climb up a cliff in LOTRO and survey Middle Earth and that is just… awesome. And night in LOTRO is one of the prettiest times.

My favorite is SWTOR. I think its gorgeous. Other than that, I would have to say wow has gotten prettier.
I’m also weird and REALLY enjoy old games like eq and DaoC, I think those games are beautiful. Not tontodays standard, but as an appreciation for the past and the history of mmos.

voydd SuppliesATK raincoat Lol – interesting thing about the GW2 concept art is that some people love it (and I mean REALLY LOVE IT) but you’re not the first one to state a dislike for it. There’s just no accounting for taste. :)
I wasn’t really talking about that though (see above). So you’ll probably agree that when you say FFXIV and GW2 are “the best ever looking mmos” you look at them from different angles. I still think that in technical terms FFXIV is far superior though. GW2 visuals hold up but for entirely different reasons.
