Guild Wars 2 reveals Stronghold PvP Mist Champions, admits SAB is on hold

ArenaNet has just announced Mist Champions for Guild Wars 2’s incoming Heart of Thorns Stronghold PvP mode. In a new dev blog released today, Branden Gee and Hugh Norfolk explain that the Mist Champions replace heroes in the Stronghold mode and act as “superweapons” during the fight. So far, there are three such characters, each plucked from lore and each with special skills: Turai Ossa, Grymm Svaard, and Nika.

The studio has also revealed that players will be allowed to toggle their game-mode preferences and choose whether they’d like to play Stronghold, Conquest, or both.

Meanwhile, Game Director Colin Johanson told fans on Reddit that the much-beloved Super Adventure Box mode would need a serious technical and itemization revamp before ANet could consider returning it to the game, and that’s not happening right now because of the impending expansion.

We’ve made a number of changes to the physics engine as a result of places like Silverwastes, Dry Top, and the expac that means we need to go back and re-work SAB to use all the new movement systems. It also needs a pretty solid rewards overhaul, and I know Josh would love to make some changes to world 2 before it returns.

We’re all focused on expansion – both the announced details, and the un-announced details and simply can’t peel anyone off a team to work on it right now without it effecting expac. The two SAB worlds we’ve seen will return as we’ve said before, but simply put our focus right now is on making the expansion amazing :)

The community is pretty bummed by the news, and so are we, but hey, at least it’s coming back eventually. The first round of Super Adventure Box took home Massively’s Best Update or Expansion award in 2013.

Nreff houyi1661 I’m not sure if that was supposed to be a comeback, if so it fails. It merely implies your standard of reference is to count what others think as short as instead being long, implying you are mostly familiar with really short ….objects….

I just wish they would leave SAB in permanently after they get it back in.

woolydub Kalamari Nreff If it’s anything like the Engineer’s Grenadier trait, then it will be fixed in the next scheduled patch and is only disabled until then.

SoMuchMass I feel like GW2 has had more impact on your life than Rift ever did. After all, you still talk about GW2. ;)

The SAB news isn’t new, they said the same thing back during PAX East (or maybe even South I can’t remember). They said EXACTLY the same thing: the game has changed, it’s impossible to put it back in without it being a buggy mess without a massive revamp, can’t revamp because everyone is working on HoT’s.
I am not sure why the GW2 community is treating this like it’s a huge news story. This is old news. Really old news.

Meh, was looking forward to another GW2 article without asinine comments from you, maybe next time.

Of course. News about no SAB is a lot easier to swallow when you have everyone working on an expansion.
You know… When asked about the status of SAB, I wonder why they couldn’t have said “We want to really revamp SAB before we put it back in game, but we cant pull anyone off this “Big Project” we’re working on right now. Hang in there!” Instead of “No plans for SAB in the future” like they did months ago.
Better to tick off your playerbase and maintain your asinine “communication policy” I guess.

Nreff houyi1661 that was not a rant, it was 3 lines of text, if you consider that a rant, which implies length, then I suggest you go back to reading something more suitable to your abilities, books such as “see spot run” for instance…

As someone who doesn’t spend a whole lot of time bitching on their forums about problems, this post regarding SAB is fresh news to me. Appears to be a rather proactive state of communication from ArenaNet. At least to me it is.

I tried jumping back into GW2…..and promptly gave up. The new character progresison system is just obtuse, and the same issues that plagued the zones are still there, and WTF have they done to lions arch, its like a little kiddies amusment park with the seafood shaped buildings……urrgh, that city used to be great looking, now its a pile of shite.
