Neverwinter’s guild keeps will require blood, sweat, and gears

Cryptic is incredibly excited about Neverwinter’s upcoming guild housing if the studio’s barrage of strongholds dev diaries is any indication.

Strongholds won’t just be given to players; guilds will need to fight hard to win them. The stronghold zone is infested with orcs, mercs, and even dragons, and players will need to “evict” them in the most lethal way possible.

Once the keep is won, guilds will need to rebuild the ruins, structure by structure. These buildings, such as the lumberyard and marketplace, require true team effort and massive number of donations. The upshot of all this work is not only a place to call home but new quests and group events to explore.

Devil Olive Serrenity Koshelkin I used to defend Cryptic. And then the webgate thing happened. Well at least they can’t retroactively nickle and dime my good memories of CO. :(

tobascodagama Day2Dan Sigbjorn Keep in mind, also, that Cryptic has used the “building up the guild base” concept for a long time in their other major title, Star Trek Online.  This, some aspects of their follower mechanic, and of course their platform for user-generated content are all to some extent shared between the two games.

Serrenity Koshelkin because of course, theres no such thing as exploiting your customers for cash, that’d go against their rational self-interest/

Devil Olive Serrenity Koshelkin Exactly. There’s good monetisation and bad monetisation, and Neverwinter falls well on the side of *bad* monetisation.

Serrenity Koshelkin There’s making money and then there are the extremes to which Cryptic takes it.

Koshelkin because god forbid a video game make money!  Really, the nerve of these people not giving us everything for free …

Koshelkin Well, it’s Neverwinter, so yeah. Though I’m sure the Stockholm syndrome suffer– er, *fans* of the game will insist the grind really truly isn’t that bad as long as you can commit to to doing all the available Astral Diamond dailies each day and also spend a couple of hours running dungeons to sell off the loot.

Day2Dan Sigbjorn It’s an idea that’s “in the water” or something, perhaps. It does seem like an obvious way to both include new group content (with perhaps slightly less work than a traditional dungeon or raid?) and also give some purpose to group housing instances, which are otherwise kind of pointless in the modern MMO paradigm of easy access to guild banks.
