Path of Exile freeing up inactive character names tomorrow

Path of Exile’s meaty Awakening content update hits the servers tomorrow, and while the patch will add plenty to the game, there’s one thing that it will be taking away: reserved names of long-inactive characters.

Grinding Gear said that it will be freeing up names from characters that haven’t been touched or played in a while. While the number of names to be freed wasn’t revealed, the studio said that it will only apply to characters that have been inactive for a year or longer. In other words, if you’ve logged onto your character in the past 12 months, that name will continue to be yours.

boredinBC Dystopiq BalsBigBrother well hopefully the new server that are going up in various parts of the world  will help with the latency

solipsis  if / when you log into the game again you will have to give an affected character a new name.  All progression and equipment is intact and is not being deleted.

I think I’ve languished long enough playing Neverwinter and LoL. Time to get back into PoE.

BalsBigBrother paragonlostinspace  Amazing, I had just assumed (wrongly) that it was more like typical mmos, but from what I am reading here that isn’t the case. I tend to keep a stable of thirty names that I’ve been using for going on forty years and I think I’d end up pulling beard hair out trying to come up with a “free” name to use in this game! LOL So yeah, you all convinced me that freeing up names for PoE is definitely a “thing” that has to occur. heh.

Dystopiq BalsBigBrother So long as you have low latency.  If your ping is high the game will feel sluggish and unresponsive as you wait for the server to acknowledge your keypress before the client displays the results.
My ping is usually great, so Im happy, but temper your expectations! :)

paragonlostinspace BalsBigBrother A big part of PoE involves running special events / leagues and you have to start a new character for each one. These events can be anything from 2 hours to 3 months in length so if you are into that type of thing then you can certainly rack up a lot of alts really easily.
I have only done a few of those and mainly just play around in the standard league trying different builds.  I think I have 15 or so character just from that and I am a casual PoE player (if there is such a thing) :-)

BalsBigBrother Now all they need to do is patch in 4 or 5 more hours into the day so I have time to play it.

BalsBigBrother paragonlostinspace Thanks BBB, I had no idea that they had 24 character slots as a default. Egad, do you need that many? So yeah, I can see how the names might fill up a bit. Anyhow appreciate the response that both you and Pepperzine gave me on this mmo. :)

Oh and I did note this on the wiki about the the game…

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_of_Exile#Reception

Which makes it sound like its doing pretty darn well. Good for them. :)

paragonlostinspace From my experience I’d say so.  They allow “_” in names which helps but because when hardcore characters die they go to the standard league it makes it so a name has to be reserved on both when a character is created, otherwise when you die on hardcore you’d have to have a name change.

Also have to take into account how many alts players have, especially in a game like PoE when you cannot easily respec, so making new characters is very common thing in the game.  I have multiple characters that are similar to each in terms of playstyle but utilize different keystones that require different paths on the passive skill tree.
On top of that there are new challenge leagues that you need to make new characters to access, but again when the challenge league ends the characters are migrated to standard servers so the name has to be reserved on it as well.
