The Daily Grind: What was your last encounter with an MMO gamemaster like?

81

MMORPG game masters may be the unsung heroes of the industry. While developers get all of the spotlight and community managers the attention, the lads and lasses in customer service get the often-unthankful job of dealing with a nonstop stream of problems and complaints.

I haven’t had the need to petition GMs very often, but when I do, they are generally quite nice folks. Sure, there’s the occasional issue that’s brushed off with no attempt to resolve it, but more often I’ve seen GMs bend over backward to restore lost characters or finish bugged quests for me.

What was your last encounter with a GM like? Tell us stories!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I had a GM do something for me once that I’m pretty sure would have gotten him/her fired, something the company he/she worked for said they would never do.  Was an amazing moment, and really made my day (and my gaming experience).
Even when GMs can’t help you, they’re so friendly, its like trying to be so pissed off at a kitten so you can punt it across the room, and instead just falling in love with it and wanting to hug it.  Its devious what they do, true sorcery!  :p

I can’t remember the last GM experience I had beyond submitting a ticket to WoW and then removing it because days had passed without contact.

However, I can say I had an extremely poor customer service experiencing with Funcom. I tried to re-activate my Age of Conan account and for some reason it had some sort of problem (with my account, not my card) and that my order would not be processed. I emailed them asking what was wrong. The tech wrote back a couple days later with “We have processed your transaction and charged your card”.

I wrote back and thanked him, but pointed out I didn’t ask him to process the previous transaction and wanted to know why it had a problem. I also asked if he had an explanation of what was wrong and if future transactions would have a problem.

The next response was “I have refunded your card and suspended your account” at which point I did a “WTF” and moved on to another game.

TSW GM’s are absolutely amazing!
Had clipping / rez issues in the Orochi tower after being trapped in one of the rooms where the doors seal after you destory the wall plates.

Super prompt GM response – within mere minutes – friendly, helpful and resolved my issue.

Other good experiences were in CoH but their response times were all over the place – within 1/2 hour to several hours later in some cases.

Ket_Viliano The game itself is good fun, and quite addicting. If you can get past the corruption(inner circle), the community is also one of the better ones I’ve seen, very helpful.

It’s definitely a ‘niche’ game, and they kinda cater to that.
I’ve seen quite a few posts over here in comments sections by certain members of the Wurm community (Talking it up) who are constantly over there on the forums playing the fanboi role also…(Trying to fob off any negative opinions as ridiculous.) I imagine they’ll chime in here if they read my comments.

Sadly, instead of actually listening to constructive criticism, the ‘norm’ over there seems to be reductio ad ridiculum/reductio ad absurdum, followed by constant in-fighting/locking of threads and censoring. They like to ‘sweep stuff under the rug’/hide it from public view…but eventually things come out.

The graphics aren’t too bad if you have a decent rig, but the memory leak problem with the whole Java encoding bit kinda causes a lot of people problems from what I hear. I barely noticed it because I run a mid-high end gaming rig that I built about 2 years ago, but traveling around on the servers/boating around tended to build it up enough to cause lag/de-syncing issues/force a re-log or 3. (Depending how far you traveled.)

The clunkyness, well, I mostly noticed that for the combat (Which needs a major overhaul….we’re talking old school Runescape type fighting here…apparently duel wielding is just broken over there so most people run around with 2Hers or sword/board, or archery if they are into that.)

MilitiaMasterV  Thank you for letting me know. In particular, about why Wurm has not taken off and become superpopular as it is one of the few virtual world games. Wurm has always been a oddity in my market analysis, I had thought it was either the graphics or clunky gameplay.

Although WoW GMs were pretty slow for me usually, I did have one point where someone was offering free stuff because they were preparing to commit suicide at one point. I started whispering to talk him down while submitting a report to GM to call authorities for help after it became apparent that he was serious about it. Apparently, they had people specifically devoted to this sort of thing that responded instantly and took over. One GM made sure I was ok and explained how they were prepared to deal with this on their end. They talked to him, and while I don’t know if they were successful in getting him help, it was really professional and unexpectedly prompt.

Telos_ On the WoW GM train. My favorite was in a hardcore raiding guild with a shitload of money + items in the Gbank.

His authenticator broke, so he had to contact GM service to have it removed.
He was miraculously hacked within hours of it being removed and him logging off that evening.

Was terrible at the time, but hilarious that a GM pulled that off on him.

Oh, and an update…the person griefing me was a ‘staff’ member who was around to help noobs. (Referred to as a CA or community assistant.) They set ‘KoS’ (Kill on Sight) on multiple deeds on me as a noob.

Their punishment? They were apparently promoted to a GM. (Just saw them post in forums today with GM tag.)

Guess we know the corruption paid off in the end…

Eliandal I had good experiences with GM’s in Tabula Rasa… although one of them did seem to always insta kill me as soon as he popped into the game. Course, I knew what was happening, and took it in my stride. I know that other players might not have been appreciated with that kind of attention, but at least I always knew when a GM was online and watching…

My last experience with a GM/Customer Support was in Elite Dangerous when I accidentally deleted my save. I logged out, sent the petition and waited. I thought it was going to be a few days for it to be resolved, but the response was prompt and I was back into the game later the following night.
I did get told by the GM : “The clear save button is a powerful tool not to be left in the hands of mere mortals, which you obviously are. You had to go and press it didn’t you?”
Was pleased for that.
Apart from that most recent experience, I rarely have to petition for anything beyond names/bots/spammers. Those are the copy/paste responses. Anything to do with a quest that is stuck, they have always been willing to help out, and check if I needed help with anything else…
I did suggest to one GM that he let me take over the whole wool market in WoW. I was told that the mages had a ‘lock on that market due to polymorph.
