Runic will show a new game at PAX Prime

Torchlight developer Runic will be revealing its new project at this year’s PAX Prime, according to a post on the company’s forums. The firm told VG247 that the title is not a Torchlight mobile port and, based on prior statements, a console port is also unlikely.

Could it be the MMO that Runic was talking about way back in 2012? We’ll find out in late August when we head to Seattle for PAX.

Runic is currently owned by Perfect World. Founders Erich Schaefer and Travis Baldree left the firm in 2014 to form an indie outfit known as Double Damage Games.

I loved TL1 and still play it to this day, was a highly active member on the Runic forums, and never once have I been able to overcome the bordom of TL2’s first chaper.
It is a giant, slogging mess of “stuff & things” but no real content & your points about the skills was spot on.
Oh, and the characters sucked: no personality and the models were bland.

Wow, I hope it’s an MMO Torchlight!  The first two single player games were really only missing one thing….  Other people!

Oleg Chebeneev DugFromTheEarth Lets see, without doing a wall of text:

1. Overdone graphics. Excessive bloom and haze imo took away from the games look at feel. The first one looked so much nicers and cleaner. Sure, it needed higher poly models, and a less “childish” look, but all the other effects were just developers going “Oooh shiny” with whatever rendering options they could enable. Not to give ANY option to disable = BAD.
2. Horrible skill trees – Often the first skill you get was better than most of the other skills you unlock later. (no wonder one of the most popular mods was synergies, fixing the awful design with a better one). This here is my main cause for stopping playing, along with MANy other people I played with. The game just wasnt rewarding to advance in because no one looked foward to new abilities once they realized they just werent as effective as spamming the lower level ones maxed out.
3. Boring level design. Sure, they were dynamically generated, but they were as much fun to explore as an ant tunnel.
4. Melee was just “off”. compared to other arpgs. Something about attacking and clicking with melee just didnt feel right as far as controls and responsiveness
5. SOOOO many effects on the screen. This caused huge amounts of “I cant even tell whats going on” syndrome. Worse in multiplayer. Is that your buddies fire on the ground, or the enemies. In fact, where the hell IS you buddy in the giant ball of chaotic combat? Your guess is as good as mine.

TL2 had its heart in the right place, and won a bunch of people over with their “you dont have to always be online like that OTHER game”, as well as their “You can mod your game! we want you to!” mentality. Outside of that, the masses just didnt play it as long as other arpgs like d2, PoE or even D3.

After reading about TL Mobile, and how you will have stamina, limiting how much you can play at a single sitting, I just cant find myself to care about whatever their next NEXT game is.

DugFromTheEarth How anyone can be disappointed with TL2? It was improvement of everything that TL1 was and gave challenging difficulty right away, not after finishing game 5 times like D3 or PoE

Yes, but no … PWE was involved from day one and was the publisher for Torchlight 1 before it shipped and had given them funding to make the game, then PWE bought in to Runic directly after it turned into a success.
The Torchlight MMO concept existed before the actual game but PWE wasn’t sold on the idea, so Runic tossed together Torchlight as a proof of concept / fundraiser …

It’ll be a new survival game based in the torchlight universe called TorchDark.
