Face of Mankind is shutting down in August

Sci-fi sandbox MMO Face of Mankind is calling it a career. A Nexeon spokesperson confirmed the news on the game’s official forum, saying that the title is “too old to create new, meaningful content, and the visuals aren’t on par with newer releases that come out on an almost daily basis.”

Creator Marko Dieckmann echoed the sentiment, saying that FoM “has been running much longer than any of us hoped for,” after noting that he started development work way back in 2001. Dieckmann says that development in those days wasn’t the relative cakewalk that it is now thanks to free toolsets like Unity and CryEngine.

Nexeon says that it considered opening the game up to community development, but decided against it because such an action “likely wouldn’t have affected the game’s growth and population.”

Yup. As you say, it looked great on paper — lots of “living world” promise to the concepts — but in the playing, it was just another gank box. A pity.

Tried it the tutorial was interesting right up to the point where it sent you out into FFA PVP zone without warning and I got jump by six guys who where just hanging out so they could kill new players. In the end it was just another gank box.

mysecretid ” the factions never lived up to their billing within the game world. ”

that’s usually an inherent problem with pre-made factions that they try to shoe-horn everyone into.

its totally at odds with the sandbox philosophy.

Jack Pipsam Play the game and you will realise why they are saying it.. the game was a niche game when released and the graphics even back then were nothing special.. now there are very few people who play it..
EQ still has quite a large play base so can carry on.

Was a shame they could not rise enough cash to create a new engine for it when they did a kickstarter for the re-release back last year.. some of the screenshots they had done looked pretty good..
Its a shame as others have mentioned it  had some great ideas and mechanics.

Thats a shame. FoM is one of the most innovative MMOs. And Ive seen so much passion from devs during project restart like a year ago.

mysecretid  With games like that you pretty much need to childproof the system so it doesn’t devolve into a PvP slaughterbox.   Unless you’re okay with that happening.

Bummer. While I never played this game, I really want games like these to do well. It was such an interesting idea, although judging from the comments, perhaps better in theory.
