EVE Online offers players a big gift of skill points for unexpected downtime

It almost makes you wish the server would be down every day, except that's a horrible idea.

Server issues happen. They are inevitable. The development teams behind games do everything within their power to make sure that they don’t happen, but sometimes it’s just the reality of the situation. EVE Online had an unexpectedly lengthy server downtime back on July 15th, and in light of that delay in play, CCP promised players some skill points to make up for the lost time to play.

Those skill points are going out today to all players who had an active training queue at the time the game could not be accessed. You can use it to catch up to what you would have lost and perhaps even a bit more besides, which is pretty nice as compensation goes.

I’m confirming that Archaea is correct.  Normally, player characters can’t possibly generate any more than 64,800 skillpoints per day (45 skillpoints per minute), and in practice the rate is often slower than this.  So, this is a small gift (rather than a “big” gift, as the headline claims) of 18.5 hours worth of skillpoints for an 11-hour downtime.

For comparison, 45 skillpoints per minute is more than 23.6 million skillpoints per year, and many players (myself included) have been subscribed for multiple years.

BKone The skill point system does not suck, it only sucks if you have no idea what you are talking about and are just making stuff up.
They won’t give out skill points at every opportunity either, I can likely count the number of times it has been done on my hands over the 11 years I have played.
Frankly I don’t think they like giving out skill points at all, but there were a lot of entitled people shouting on the EVE forums about “compensation” which is why I think we got anything in the end..

The servers were down for roughly 11 hours and they gave everyone around one day worth of free skill points.
Not really a ton in the grand scheme of things but it’s definitely something nice for the downtime.

Styopa They serve some purpose. Mostly just PvE harvesting of materials. They have some interaction with DUST514 but not much.

And originally, the planets in EVE did have an orbit, but long term they determined it caused more complications than benefits so they removed it.

Styopa Sony dudes live down there. Exclusively.
Anyway, this is an acknowledgment that the skill point system sux.
From now on they will find every opportunity to give out skill points. Which is not a bad thing, but very cheesy.

Re the picture, I do wish the planets in Eve mattered at all.  AFAIK, you don’t land on them, you never interact on them, you don’t live on them – hell, nobody apparently lives on them?  You can’t even crash into them.  I don’t think that they block scanning?

Heck, do they even move in the game (do they orbit or just in reality sit there as fixed things)?
