MechWarrior Online launches European servers and rolls out new machines

ROBOT ROCK YOU

Yes, MechWarrior Online has rolled out an expansion. You didn’t know about that? Probably because you were waiting for some huge new content drop, but this expansion is a server expansion. European players can now use a local server to play rather than being forced to deal with high international pings. With European players making up some 40% of the game’s playerbase, it’s a pretty logical move.

The game has also rolled out the final two Clan ‘Mechs for purchase and use in the game, the Arctic Cheetah and the Shadow Cat. Fans of the tabletop game will recognize these iconic war machines, whilst other players can just enjoy piloting a new sort of weapon into battle. On faster servers, if you’re in Europe. It all ties together nicely, doesn’t it?

James Westfall  That was Mechwarrior Tactics, which IGP, the publisher PGI eventually managed to free themselves from, pretty much did a runner from by shutting down, leaving the people who paid for access up shit creek without a paddle.

RicharddeLeonIII  The problem with LRMs is that they’re an “feast or famine” weapon, pretty much unlike every other weapon in the game, thanks to the way ECM works.  If you meet a team with ECM mechs who aren’t Complete newbies then any damage your LRMs will du is pretty much a bonus, because they’ll rarely hit anything.  If you meet a team who does not use cover and has little to no ECM support, however, while your team has plenty of LRMs then they will experience the LRMpocalypse.  No other weapon is more or less completely shut down by another piece of Equipment, ECM, which you have no control over.

Other than that, IMO, the game is actually quite fun.  I still enjoy it, and I’ve played since closed beta.

This is truly one of those games that’s night and day between playing with random group or a regular unit.
Went back to playing with some real life friends who were part of a unit that practices , has tactics matches internally etc.
It’s night and day.
Way more fun now playing with coordinated units vs other coordinated units.

This game is a cheaply made money grab, not worth playing I wish someone would come out with a real MechWarrior game

RicharddeLeonIII The biggest balance issue I remember is that they just couldn’t figure out what to do with LRMs. They nominally kept the stat spreads from tabletop but kept screwing around with guidance rules, or something like that.

tobascodagama The balance issues are still there imho, but considering its free to play its worth jumping in for a break.  Most of the balance issues stem from the fact they try to stick with the pen and paper construction rules as much as possible.  Medium laser boats and guass monsters were always a problem on tabletop.

I haven’t played since about six months after launch. I remember this game being really fun, but PG just had no grasp on balance whatsoever and the P2W elements just grew and grew over time.

Is it worth redownloading the game and firing it up again on a lark?

James Westfall The game is actually doing really really well. I have a number of RL friends that play it a lot.
