Were you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review!

Daybreak reps confirmed this week that veteran John Smedley, who led the MMO-building company for almost two decades, has stepped down from his position. The outspoken game head has recently beleaguered by extreme harassment by online thugs and supposedly will return from his vacation with a new role.

Though Daybreak and Smed have been otherwise silent on the topic, Smed’s rivals have not. “John was the driving force at the helm of SOE as they committed more and more resources to online gaming when almost nobody else was willing to do so,” Camelot Unchained’s Mark Jacobs wrote. “[I]f it wasn’t for him and SOE, I have no doubt that our slice of the gaming industry wouldn’t be where it is today.”

Read on for the very best of this week’s MMO news and opinions.

Ambitious Project Gorgon is back on Kickstarter - Third time's the charm for Project Gorgon's Kickstarter, right? We hope so, as the ambitious indie fantasy sandpark is asking for a modest $20,000 to further its development. Unlike most Kickstarter MMOs, Gorgon has already been…
MMO Burnout: Why I want an Assassin’s Creed MMO - I play a fair amount of single-player stuff when I'm not playing MMOs, and at the risk of outing myself as one of those infernal dudebros, I love the Assassin's Creed franchise. And I do mean…
Phantasy Star Online 2 is IP-blocked again in the west - If you're a western fan of Phantasy Star Online 2, I'm sorry. SEGA still doesn't care to take your money, apparently, because the company's on-again-off-again IP blocking scheme for PSO2 is on again. A few days…

Serrenity He may deserve it I don’t really know or care.  I’m semi-bummed that a few teenage shitheads drove a grown man out of a job – but at the same time Smed made his bed on that one.  He probably learned a few things from this experience.  Hopefully they get bored in their celebrations and at least leave the man alone.

Armsbend I’m just bothered that the “You might not like Smed, but he’s a human being and deserves some decency and respect” with blind loyalty.  I really have no strong feelings on Smed at all, outside of he’s not deserving of all the shit that’s being piled on him.  (for that matter, I don’t think ANY is … cept maybe Smart).

It’s the case of respecting the good things he has done, while not respecting the bad things he has done and all points in between. I don’t see this as a contradiction.

Serrenity naifean I think he is confusing the old term “childish bore” and running the the animal metaphor. I never heard anyone use the term boar as a slight. Running really far with it I might add.

As if saying, “hey you, majestic animal that has been hunted as a trophy for centuries, that to this day is used as a metaphor of honor and prowess…yeah…you are stupid”.

breetoplay Armsbend No, no I meant all of us.  Not the writers just the general comments and feelings in general.

naifean Yeah, there’s nothing about this that contributes to any real conversation, and it’s pretty offensive overall.

While Smed has done a lot of good things for the industry, and for the bottom line of SOE^H^H^HDaybreak Games, he *ALSO* is responsible for approving all the major gameplay changes that have drained the soul from SWG, EQ2, Vanguard, EQ, and likely several other MMO’s I’ve forgotten over the years.

In his seeming quest to screw over every loyal fan of each franchise so he could chase after the casual $$$’s, he has earned every bit of vitriol aimed his way.  Of course, younger people who never played any of those crufty old games won’t know why anyone is annoyed with him, but I’ll just say that EQ2 used to have a very distinct flavor that set it apart from WoW and all the other MMO’s in the same genre.  That flavor was thrown away, years ago.

So, while I wish him well, I also wish him well in the hopes he finds a new role where he won’t find new ways to make things worse for players who enjoy depth, story, and challenge more than pretty graphics and fluff.

Serrenity Yes, all the hate for a delusional childish boar–who not only sent death threats to a minor, but thinks prison rape is a thing that should be handed out as punishment–is very sad! I, like you, am also DEPRESSED over all the lashings that an unapologetic manchild–who I am not connected to in any way, shape or form–is getting over the comments section of a game journalism site.

Nevermind the actual people who go through depression, fuck them! Our Lord and Savior Smedley Christ is currently being crucified, and as a loyal disciple it is my duty to claim to have mental illness in the hopes that it will soothe His wounds.

Fuck y’all who attempt to defend the boar. A pig is a pig is a pig no matter how much dick it has sucked.
