Heroes of the Storm bribes players to try it out

Is this the summer of Heroes of the Storm? Blizzard would really like it to be, as the studio is not above a little digital bribery to get you and your friends to play its new MOBA.

From now through August 4th, the studio is giving out free seven-day stimpacks to all brand-new players in each region. Stimpacks dole out extra experience and gold after each match played. Current players might not be eligable for stimpacks, but they can get a nice 50% XP boost by getting a friend to sign up and play the game.

It’s how the competition does it.  It actually works out extremely well.  You get more points for a win so nobody tries to manipulate it.  You can’t win trade your way to more points either.

TheChiHawk “essentially the same game” are you re….. ?

I never played a game of Dota or LoL where the map just trolololololol’ed and won the game for me, by bursting down everything in my base.

PizzaDoh Same thoughts as mine. The most grindy MOBA out there is Smite as far as I can tell from my experience. Those gold skins are damn hard to get than Master Skins from HotS

Played it. Its a dumbed down moba, no thanks. I like complexity, not simplicity. But hey, its Blizzard what else should we expect.

This has confused and annoyed many players as on the launcher it seemed to imply that any player who logs in gets it.
And as the grind gets super annoying after level 8 on a character and 20 on account, Stim Packs are great.
So they should have just given it to everybody, because the comment section on their blog post about this is full of rage.

This is the game that got me playing a MOBA.  It’s fast, furious, and fun.  I have no idea what people mean by “grindy” – you play the game, you earn coins, it’s that simple.  If you are very casual without a lot of time this game is near perfect – matches take 30 mins or less, and a 25+ minute match means a really good game that leaves you breathless for more.

Joseph C dorn2 Why would you want the amount of time played to factor into the gold reward? That would make the game ripe for maniupulation.

I still can’t believe I’m actually playing a MOBA nightly. Granted it isn’t as meta-heavy as LoL or Dota2, but it’s still essentially the same game. The most interesting thing about my experience is the wildly swinging pendulum between having A LOT OF GOD DAMN FUN and being absolutely, miserably frustrated a few games later. I can see why people rage in these games–but I’ve really found it more constructive to teach and suggest instead of going on a caps-lock and expletive laden rants.
Typically, if I find my blood pressure rising this means its time to take a break and do something else. LOL

Siphaed TBH I found this to be the least grindy moba. The quests give you huge amounts of gold, leveling up to 40 gets you huge amounts of gold, leveling up champions to 5 gets you 500 gold (super easy to hit 5).

Compared to league and smite, this game is a cake-walk when it comes to unlocking free content.

At the end of the day if you’re not paying any money though, yeah don’t expect a full roster any time soon..
