The Daily Grind: How much money have you spent on MMOs this month?

142

I bought EverQuest II’s latest expansion yesterday, and along with my SOE Statio… er, my Daybreak All-Access pass and my Star Wars: The Old Republic subscription, that brings my total MMO expenditures for the month of July to USD $75.00.

That’s 75 bucks for unlimited access to five triple-A MMORPGs, any one of which could easily fill up 200 hours of my month if I let it. My point is that MMOs are one of the cheapest hobbies around, even if you pay multiple subs and buy $45 expansion packs.

What about you, MOP readers? How much money have you spent on MMOs this month, and how much entertainment value have you gotten for your money?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

This month, nothing; all my gaming money went to Humble Bundle, GOG, and Steam.
This year, or worse yet the last few years? I don’t want to even think about it. Multiple lifetime MMO subscriptions, many buy to play MMOs, very complete packs for some F2P MMOs (such as almost every purchasable hero and teamup in Marvel Heroes), more money than I care to remember given to KS ones like Elite: Dangerous (which I regret) and Shroud of the Avatar (which I don’t), and so on.

The one thing I don’t do anymore is to pay a subscription. If I truly like a game, and the game offers it, I might purchase a $200 to $300 lifetime sub, but I believe I’m done paying monthly (or per any time unit less than eternity) for access to a game.

$120 on Rift for the new Power Pack and 18500 Credits. But the last time I actually gave Trion money was in 2013 when my Patron sub ran out. Up to now I was riding on all the Credits I got for subscribing since Launch.
Before that was my annual Wildstar sub last August. But that is going away as well since it goes out past the F2P transition and I won’t be keeping it up after that.

So if you’d asked me last month it would have been $0 and not any for quite a while.

This month? About $10usd. That was yesterday. Bought some marvel heroes g points. Haven’t spent em yet, just wanted some in my wallet so I have it when I do want to use it.
Last month? A little over $400. I had a couple subs I needed to renew, so I sprung for the 12 month options. I also needed a bit more isk for Eve to pay for my FW habit, so dropped some on a PLEX bundle to offload at jita 4-4.
Next month? Probably not much, I don’t have anything due afaik.

Lifers/subs get 400 zen per month. While thats ok for minor stuff it takes a while to buy the ships. I had maybe 10k saved up before i started buying ships hard. But even 10k isnt enough with top tier ships goin for 2.5 and 3k.

$30, in EQ2, resubbed(glad I did, this game is so good and filled with content and worth the cost of the sub, unlike, ahem, WoW) and also bought the Rum Cellar campaign.  Almost resubbed to SWTOR but realized it was pointless as I’m so hooked by EQ2 right now I would just be throwing money away on a game I won’t play at the moment.

Ah I have only dabbled in STO a couple of times. Enough to know a lifetime option exists and you get some cash shop currency every month with it but not enough to know how much that cash shop currency equates to in real terms.

Project54 RicharddeLeonIII aye, I have lifetime with STO, CO, and TSW.  Only reason i bought some zen for some keys for the year of hell lockboxes and now I just bought an Alita escort carrier.  I dont play enough to take advantage of the dilithium to zen market and I can get impatient if i dont have enough zen when a shiny comes up.

Fair enough, I did ask! I hadn’t considered the RP angle.
Yeah I understand what you mean about supporting TSW, I can never shake that niggling feeling (being a grandmaster) that essentially now whenever I log on I’m just a cost. They had/spend my money a long time ago but yet still have the costs of providing server resources for me and others like me. It seems a little backward that their biggest fans stop giving them money :/
