League of Legends does not in fact kill off Gangplank for real at all

Losing in a way that's incidentally the same as not in fact losing at all.
Just a few days ago, dear reader, we wrote to you about how League of Legends had done something novel by killing off the character Gangplank in a permanent fashion. A character lost his life in the ongoing story despite being something that people paid for, and the story suddenly held renewed significance.

Only it turns out that rather than killing off Gangplank for real, Riot Games did the exact opposite and he was not killed off for real. He is, in fact, very much alive and will be back in the game’s next major patch, thus rendering any and all speculation regarding his status as “dead” to be wholly false.

The character will have a visual redesign, but players who have played Gangplank during the event or in the stretch after he is re-enabled on Tuesday will have access to a special “classic” skin for the character. It’s not spectacular news for those who were hoping for renewed focus on story in League of Legends, but it’s good news for those who did pay actual money to unlock the character.

I always assume, when I have no other real reason not too, that to take such a statement at face value and deal with it there. But the thought of Kenny dying all those times in South park in vein, did cross my mind when reading that. :(

ManastuUtakata Lights_andMusic  I’m pretty sure L&M was being sarcastic.  At least I hope he has.

Damonvile  LoL had lore awhile ago that actually made sense.  League of Legends was the name of basically a grand Mortal Kombat-esque tournament thing that the different nations of Runeterra used to settle their differences after warring for ages.  And there was some sort of council overseeing it and Summoners would mentally connect with the champions and stuff to empower them in battle or w/e.   Hell there was at least one in-game event between two factions that led to the victor (Ionia) getting an item named after the event (the Ionian Boots of Lucidity).

Then they decided to take a huge dump on all of that because they didn’t like feeling obligated to stick to the lore.  So now they’re doing random events like this as sort of short stories giving some extra details on the dark and mysterious pasts of their characters.  And there’s so much broken pieces of character backgrounds and whatnot because of that.

Greaterdivinity ManastuUtakata Yeah.  Chances are that they had the story/new base model planned out awhile ago.  But decided to pay off dataminers to keep hush-hush about the new GP look in order to make everyone believe that the “Captain Gangplank skin” was the new Gangplank.

Mezla CharcoalCrow Lol.  The only thing connecting Luffy/Roger is the straw hat passed down to Luffy and the “Will of D” plot device that’s still as horribly vague as the moment it was first brought up years ago.

You mean that character they just reworked and disabled a week later wasn’t going to be permanently disabled? Who would’ve thought! /s

But seriously it was pretty obvious they’d bring him back.  However, I was genuinely surprised that they managed to pull a fast one on people and introduce a new default look to Gangplank that fits with the created lore, while calling the new pirate remodel his “Captain” skin which they’re giving for free.

Now to buy Gangplank and play around with him.

We all knew he was coming back. Only now he has a cool metal arm!
So in short, they reworked and then redesigned, and then redesigned.
