Civilization Online sums up its beta with a highlight trailer

Civilization Online’s oddball building-sim-plus-PvP gameplay is highlighted in a new trailer that serves as a bookend for the Korean closed beta test. XLGAMES has no plans to release the title in the west, where the developer is best known for ArcheAge and its lackluster reception along a rocky post-release road.

Civ Online looks to capitalize on the long-running strategy series that it’s named after, though gameplay differs in that each session lasts for about a week and features both cooperative empire building and group PvP attacks against enemy empires.

TimothyTierless Its not a typical mmo, people complain about wow style mmos and when we get one no one cares so all we’re ever going to get is tab targetting

Giggilybits A sack of cash for doing very little without risking your brand.

Pesko They don’t want to cheapen the goodwill their title has in the market that matters most:  the West.  And if XL could pull out a good game (lol I know) they might release it.

Like ^ said, pure speculation > but probably close to the mark.

Giggilybits Do you really want another online game from XLGames ported over to the west? They made ArcheAge and the client was so riddled with poor coding that the Russians had a field day hacking the game with almost every possible hack you can think of for an MMO. What makes you think this game would be any different? Or less of a cash grab than ArcheAge is.

I’m pretty sure Firaxis and Sid Meier own the Civilization brand? I believe Take Two is only the publisher.

As for your question, we were theorizing here an earlier article here that, perhaps, licensing an asian game is a way to test the appeal of this sort of Civ spinoff, while the asian licenser takes most of the risks?

If it fails, Firaxis can say, “Oh, well, that wasn’t us”, and pretend it never happened, but if it proves popular, they can make arrangements to bring a version to the west.

Pure guesswork, of course,

Cheers,

Seems popular, seeminly spawned a survival clone “tree of life” as well.

Saerain Good to know I wasn’t the only one seeing that. I thought it was my computer being weird with the video playback or something.

I assume Take-Two Interactive own “Civilization” trademark & IP? I know they’re the publisher. If so, why would they license the actual game to a company that has “no plans” to develop it in the West?

Boy, there are some frame rate issues, there.
