The Daily Grind: Do you play on private servers for dead MMOs?

138

Massively OP Kickstarter donor Igor aka Slaith proposes we debate private servers for dead MMOs for today’s Daily Grind — specifically, he mentions Warhammer Online.

This is always a difficult topic on website such as ours. Many of our writers and readers feel very strongly about sunsetted MMORPGs and don’t feel any moral pangs when playing and writing about them aside from the worry that any publicity we generate for them might do more harm than good. While emulators for living games are usually clearly illegal and frequently contested by the studios whose work is being stolen (notable exceptions notwithstanding), sunsetted games pose more ambiguity. A number of studios tacitly allow emus, admitting they’re aware of them but putting up no fuss. Some even chip in and give the go-ahead.

How about you? Do you play on private servers for dead MMOs?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Thanks Pedge. I heard of it and plan to check it out when it matures. For now, enjoying EQ TLP on Ragefire.
Funny. I still think a graphically updated EQ (with some modernized mechanics) would be awesome. I don’t know why they won’t do it.

ntellect The Repopulation is the closest thing they’ll probably be to SWG. It’s not bad but it’s got quite a long way to go in it’s current state.

I love the Vanilla WoW servers and SWGemu and still jump on those occasionally.

Valkyriez Almost exactly, except with a tiny budget, and some pretty dated graphics. Admittedly, it’s still in early stages, so it’s possible they throw a good solid polish layer on top closer to release. I’m holding out hope they can pull it off, but I’d still rather see a larger dev take on this kind of sandboxiness.
I may give ARK a shot and see where that goes.

ManastuUtakata Yes, this very gaming news site has covered its partial resurrection. http://massivelyop.com/2015/06/22/city-of-heroes-is-returning-as-a-chat-client/

I think it would be criminal NOT to allow people to play such a good original or custom modded game game.
with the huge success of vanilla wow servers (ive been playing on one non stop for 3 weeks now), and my involvement in a custom original UO server (zulu australis), I am now downloading the everquest 1 install so i can play on the OFFICIAL classic server.

I think its great and draws people into a product if they offer these alternate servers. the companies should offer them so we don’t have to use underground methods of getting into the game.

I would love to play a SWG (any version) as I have only heard good things

Vikingr ityere Jack Pipsam My guess is that if ever released, SC will end with very few people while all the rest blame themselves.
