Star Trek Online invites the players to help hunt down bugs

Bugs are but a dream.
Bugs. They plague every online game, no matter how hard the designers try to hunt them down. So Star Trek Online is seeking an obvious ally in the face of bugs by employing players to help hunt down these bugs as part of the new Operational Support Team. This team will be a select group of players working with the developers to submit and resolve bugs in the game.

Needless to say, this is a volunteer position, not a paid one; it’s just away for dedicated STO players to help make the game better for everyone. By locating and trying to reliably reproduce bugs, you can be unpaired QA for your favorite game as well! That will result in a more stable game overall in the end, so if you have the time and the will, it may be worth it to volunteer.

Armsman – No. The people who were trying to report ‘Voldemort’ were not posting detailed instructions on how to reproduce it. They started threads asking who to PM reproduction steps to because they knew the in-game bug reporting system was broken but they didn’t want to put the information on the forums and increase the number of people who knew how to abuse the bug.
Instead of letting them know who they could PM this info to the mods locked the threads and perma-banned people. Of course they didn’t actually mention this bug that people were trying to report to the devs. Because of this the devs didn’t find out about this bug until a little over a year later when STOked told everyone about it.

Peregrine_Falcon  To be fair, they never banned people for reporting bugs. They DID take action against people posting step by step instructions on how to take advantage of a known exploit after posting that they were aware of said exploit and warning players who knew of it NOT to post such instructions publically; (the same as have OTHER MMO developers have done when their players have posted such info.)
The ‘Voldemort’ (aka Ship Shield) bug was resolved years ago too (but did occur twice in the game’s lifecycle to date.)

I don’t know why they bother. There are still hundreds of bugs with full repro steps that have been around and unfixed for years, maybe they should fix those before asking fore MORE bug reports?

GoJammit Silverbourne Ayran – Cryptic did starship contests in order to get free artwork 4 years ago.
You know what else they did? Outright steal someone’s artwork for one of their promotional pieces.

That’s awesome! I wonder if they’re going to perma-ban people from the forums for trying to report bugs, like they did before.
Why do you think they call it the “Voldemort Bug”?

“it’s just away for dedicated STO players”

Did you do that on purpose, as in “away team”?

Silverbourne Ayran Star Citizen kinda already did that. That next great starship contest they did. They said thy would most likely be using some of the losers designs. But they did hire some people from the contest.

KorryHarris ApathyCurve Right there with you brother. I hate that I played through the Delt quadrant stuff with my Rom.

Good. Maybe I can play their new content without some game breaking bug next time around. They don’t need a team of bug testers. They need a team of bug fixers because in almost every case, they are told before release. Like every other company.
