SMITE has officially launched on the Xbox One
Hi-Rez has officially launched SMITE on the Xbox One. The firm says via press release that its mythology MOBA is in fact the first MOBA on Microsoft’s current-gen console, and that it “amassed over one million unique players” during its Xbox One beta test.

If you were one of those testers, you’ll be happy to know that all of your purchases and progress will carry over past launch. SMITE will host its first major Xbox One tourney at the Major League Gaming World Finals beginning October 16th in New Orleans.

Hi-Rez plans monthly god releases, updates to SMITE’s gameplay and content, and UI patches to include multi-language support, spectator support, “and much more.”

Sorenthaz They don’t do monthly god releases on PC, i would say gods come out every 6 weeks or so really. On top of that they are keeping the X1 always one patch behind PC, They need to get it in line and the controls on X1 for Mages are terrible. Anyone with a placeable ability the right thumbstick is no way a replacement for the mouse. VGS is a nightmare too

SoMuchMass Dnote That is right after the new shiny launch of a new shiny tital on the consoles. Initialy it will draw in more members but that will never be persistent. Its easy for a lot of players to take a look at a F2P game that is only a 5gb download.
But how many of those will actually keep playing it for more then a day or a few more?

Sorenthaz Siphaed Except that Microsoft announced last month that they were going to be bringing USB keyboard and mouse support for gaming purposes to the XB1, so that advantage is soon to be gone as well. Ultimately, if any MOBA is ever going to work on consoles, it’s going to be SMITE, as it plays more like a 3rd person shooter than a MOBA. It just happens to follow the game rules of DOTA.

Dnote In North America and Europe the breakout of PS4 to Xbox One  is about 60% to 40%.  Xbox One sold 11+ million, I wouldn’t call that small by any means.

Armsbend Dnote No, but MOBAs make less money per user than almost every other type of free to play game. MOBAs are also heavily reliant on the player population being sufficient to enable the game to work, its a purely multiplayer experience.

It is also inherently more expensive to support an Xbox game, given the cut Microsoft take and the cost they impose on patches.

Dnote Do you think every profitable f2p game on pc has 500,000 active players?

Curious how this is going to work, given how few Xbox One owners there are.

Free to play games, including MOBAs, require a large pool of potential players. I can’t imagine that every Xbox One owner is going to be interested, but I don’t know if it will be niche or not.

Probably needs to maintain around 500,000 active players to stay profitable, which is a lot given how few Xbox One owners there actually are.

It will be interesting to see if the console crwod has the same experience as the pc crowd on the MOBA scene.  Whether it will translate and if they will “get it”.

I think they will since the draw is pure, evenly balanced player versus player and the biggest hits on console gravitate towards that.
