The Daily Grind: What’s the best MMO prison?

66

Fictional prisons can be pretty fascinating to explore in books and video games. I’ve noticed that pretty much every MMO has at least one if not two or more significant prisons, usually in a state of prisoner revolt or break-out.

I have fond memories of plundering the Stormwind Stockade in World of Warcraft, of the prison-planet Belsavis in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and of the mighty (and inexplicably tall) Ziggurat in City of Heroes. More prisoners to beat up? Don’t mind if I do!

What is the best MMO prison in your opinion and why? For bonus conversation, would you play an MMO that takes place entirely inside a fantasy or high-tech prison?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Would I play a game that takes place entirely in a prison? I played EvE, and that takes place entirely inside an asylum.

I don’t know about best, but my first impression of the dungeon in the mountains between Qeynos and Freeport is forever tied to one, as a lowbie rogue who snuck all the way there, only to be killed by some nasty prisoner in one hit while exploring that mountain stronghold… yeah, lol, fun times.

Vunak Evwald  That, and the other means of escaping from the system and still profiting…
A clever crime should have a reward.  AA had too many failures before you ever saw the jail in terms of a crime and justice system, and the jail stuff was entertaining for a bit, but it was nothing for an actual important system.

Ghostmourn  Eh, you could/can run complete workarounds for the justice system.  If you can work around it, it isn’t a justice system, or a prison so much.

Per my experience Archeage takes the cake, the prison and the court system go far beyond anything else I know of.

Yes and no. I think if you escape you shouldn’t retain the debuff. Other than that,  yeah I think you are correct.
I would of liked to of seen more involvement with pirates and things like that for people breaking you out of jail. More exaggeration on it. Like a dungeon involved where people friends or guildies can go through to break you out. Or you having to work together with other inmates to break out etc.
