Guild Wars 2 hands out third anniversary gifts

If you created a character at the beginning of Guild Wars 2’s head start, then you’ll want to log in today to get your new birthday gifts.

Yes, it’s incredible to realize that Guild Wars 2 is already celebrating its third birthday! As such, the game has a parcel of presents ready to hand out to characters who have been around for three years. Included in the gift pile is an instant-level 30 scroll, a choice of one dye from one of the themed kits, several teleports to friends, and two birthday boosters.

Players will also get a new finisher that sends the Guild Wars 2 logo flying into the air (with a neat planetary effect), which you can see after the jump.

Esoteric Coyote Telos_ Kalamari Not even completely account based. I’ve got a launch account, spent plenty in their gem store, but because I’ve deleted/remade my early characters (due to lack of racial change option in the game and limited character slots) I won’t be seeing these rewards for another year or two :)

Why didn’t you include meaningful raids GW2?! WHHYYYY?!?! *sobs and logs into WoW*

Seriously, though. I LOVE this game, but I cannot convince any of my friends to join because we’re a casual raiding guild and there’s just no place for (the group of) us there :(

In any event, happy anniversary :D

Telos_ Kalamari Kinda in this boat.  I heard about all the good stuff and logged in to see my mail empty.  Had to look into it, account is too young, so I’ll get those cool gifts in 2 and half years.  I don’t think I’ll be playing then, but they are nice gifts to reward the veterans.  I really envy the free dyes.  Dyes are such a luxury to me, since the only way for me to get them in expensive crafting, AH, or laurels.  And I think there’s better things to blow 5 laurels on than a single dye which will be 99% chance to be worth 6 silver.

No More Tears MatthewRiddle Perhaps I don’t consider insta-max level Pay-2-win. I mean, isn’t Pay-2-win supposed to make the character win? Being max level doesn’t mean the character is going to win any battles. They still need new gear.In the past, I’ve been against WoW models of insta-level scrolls, because they just sell it. Here, pay us X dollars and skip the majority of our content. But that doesn’t apply to GW2 for 2 reasons: 1) Characters can scale down to the area and go back and experience every bit of it for full value, unlike most linear vertically progressed MMOs, and 2) GW2 isn’t sell these scrolls, they are giving them out to characters that have been around for at least a year. More of a reward than a purchase. And heck, I’ll throw in a 3) I mentioned needing multiple scrolls stacking to get a more potent one. I’m not asking for a character to be one year old and get an insta-max level scroll. But if a player has 8 characters at max level (which I do), I believe our anniversary rewards should stack in some way so that they are more potent.Deserve? Sticking with the game for three years. Getting 8 characters to max level. I don’t think I’m asking for too much, and I do think players DESERVE scaling and stacking rewards.

MatthewRiddle Never use the word “deserve” when talking about gameplay mechanics or virtual items. It comes off very poorly and gives the impression that you have a irrational sense of entitlement.

Very nice effect.

MatthewRiddle “deserve”
*dons fedora and strokes neck*

If a game adds max-level characters for sale in a cash shop, people call it pay-to-win.
But if players demand max-level characters for free… does that make it deserve-to-win?

Dystopiq  I don’t understand why people think this, anyone with a base understanding of a game and an IQ of double digits can easily pick up a max level character of another class and learn it in a few minutes.  There is no magical secrets to be learnt by levelling them slowly, just read the skill descriptions.

Kalamari Telos_ It doesn’t make sense then to celebrate GW2 as an anniversary, since it’s tied to character creation, and not on a launch day.  Not only that, but everyone else is celebrating while others cannot, especially when guilds and player hosted events are using their gifts.  So yeah, it’s a problem and yes, some people are missing out.

I really wish Arena net could figure out a way to reward players for having old characters but not make it redundant if they have 5+ characters.
The dyes are a nice option. But I don’t need 8 lv30 scrolls. 1 lv30 scroll for the revenant, sure.
I wish you could combine scrolls and they’d get stronger. So combine 6 lv30 scrolls into a lv80 scroll. Combine 2 lv20 scrolls into a lv30 scroll. So each extra scroll would just add 10 levels.
I mean, if someone has 8 alts, and they are all 3 years old, they have likely already leveled each to max level and (imho) deserve an insta-80 scroll.
