Star Citizen starts testing social module

Getting chummy with your fellow Star Citizen space pilots has taken one step closer to becoming an in-game reality today, as RSI announced that it has commenced testing of the upcoming social module.

The social module allows players to interact with each other via global chat and emotions in the ArcCorp station. The module will be rolled out in several phases, so while all of the current characters use the default FPS looks, eventually players will be able to choose their own clothes.

“The social milestones are more about laying groundwork and testing base functionality — network functionality and performance, in particular,” Director Tony Zurovec said in a community Q&A. It was revealed that there will be a few more large updates to the social module as the year goes on, including more customization options, maps, and larger instance capacity.

The studio has an NDA of sorts in place right now, as it’s asked players not to share videos and pictures from the module yet. So if you’re curious, you can instead check out the social module demo video from Gamescom after the break!

BobDobalina Stunning!  They’ve nailed the whole feeling of landing on an asteroid with a mining colony on it.  The lighting is amazing.  Shame about the frame rate, though I’m not sure if that’s a frate rate issue with the encoding or the game itself.  Right now, I don’t care because as we know the game is still in alpha and they’ve said that there’s still optimisations to be done.

I agree with you that PVP should optimally be consensual. As it is now it won’t be possible to play 100% PVE but that may change in the future.

My main concern is the camera speed. Chiefly in 3rd person but also in 1st person. I want a slider for that so I can control how fast the camera moves when I look left, right, up and down. Except in combat, maybe, since that would affect gameplay. The current speed should be max. and the slider set to min. would be 10x slower.

Vikingr Oh I agree that the jump point exit locations will help that’s for sure, and there’s been talk of the “PVP/PVE slider” but CIG seem to be very cagey talking about that.  And understandbly so.  Nevertheless that is one of my main concerns.  I guess we’ll see. :)

“One of my concerns about Star Citizen is that it could turn out to be a PVP gankfest like Eve.”

Ganking will be almost impossible in Star Citizen because the jump point’s exit point will wobble. Gankers may not even register on their scanners that anyone exited a jump point. Of course there could be other types of ganking too but you can’t avoid all of it, I guess.

GabeNewellFetish There will always be someone “pissed off” for some reason or other.  For instance, some are bitching how the entirety of ArcCorp isn’t open yet (regardless of the fact that first iterations are not often complete).
I guess we’ll see just how far along they are come October time, hopefully by then we’ll have the FPS and AC2.0 to get our teeth into as well.

Man. This game is just about to break $90,000,000 in funding. In the last 7 months, it has done $17,000,000 in funding. Break that down to work hours in a week and they are bringing in about $14,000 USD per hour of the work week. That is insane.

Personally, I don’t care if this takes another two years to produce. They’ve got a lot of funding and I’d rather they take their time and do it right rather than rush something out, piss off a lot of people, then limp along with no playerbase.

kofteburger That still isn’t out?!

I stopped playing EVE-Online after about seven years, in 2010… and it was supposedly “on the cusp” at the time. Then they went off and did that PS3 thing nobody played. And shut down the studio for the vampire game.

bayspoon One of my concerns about Star Citizen is that it could turn out to be a gankfest like Eve.  Thankfully the head dude isn’t a fan of PVP (though no doubt some of his devs are).  So I’m hoping that the PVP/PVE slider will give people the freedom to play the game without being forced too much into gameplay they’re not interested in.
Elite Dangerous allows players to “filter” out what gameplay it’s players want allowing for solo, group (co-op), and even choose to drop into the “open world” (inc. pvp).  I’m hoping that Star Citizen will do something similar.
