The Daily Grind: What MMOs do you avoid based on art design?

During my few weeks trial of Final Fantasy XIV, I came to two solid conclusions. First, the game was awfully pretty and detailed — pure screenshot material. And second, I could not stand the art style at all. Seriously, it gave me hives.

When it comes to an MMO’s looks, one can acknowledge a crowd-pleasing aesthetic while still finding it personally repulsive or attractive. I’ve seen similar responses for, say, WildStar, as friends have noted that it’s certainly colorful and well-designed, but for them it’s too busy and stylized to be enjoyable.

Have you ever found yourself shying away from an MMO based on its art design? Do you ever say, “If it only looked different, I’d totally play that!”?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Everquest 2 straight up had some of the ugliest ‘art’ I’ve ever seen in an MMO, even compared to it’s contemporaries.

SWTOR. The whole game is great but the art/graphics is seriously jarring for a person who loved MTG and Witcher art styles.

Wildstar. I just don’t care for it at all.

Gangrel Yeah, remembered today. I even did some screenshots in first person mode …

ZenDadaist squidgod2000 City of Heroes has this problem in spades. I could easily lose my mouse with all the effects firing off sometimes

Most asian style artwork because the first thing that comes to mind when I see it is, “this must be made in Asia”. I mean, why so consistent? They all look the same to me lol.

I can’t really think of any I’d never played based on artstyle – my most hated “style” is the ones where women are clothed, positioned, animated, everything purely for sex appeal… but my avatar on livefyre is from TERA. I’m playing Skyforge right now (as a guy, though) and enjoying it. So I don’t think artstyle by itself can put me off, but it can count as a first strike against the game.

PurpleCopper Lol, i played 6 out of 7 of your references and i can relate, and each of those i stopped playing for a different reason.
I could pinpoint each of every game’s strength and weaknesses to make a perfect mmo, theoretically of course.
TL;DR: I also avoid everything.

No one commented on the alternative, avoidance based on game mechanics.
The style i still miss is Runescape. But on the technical side i like material and texture quality used in Tera, but not the character design, they just messed up design in general.
Anything i can predict traditional grind mechanics or, in this case (art design), a sense for pre-made or reskinned game, i just avoid.
