Shroud of the Avatar posts Release 21 features and instructions

Boy, if you haven't crafted a large enough number of chainmail things over the years...

The bright side of Shroud of the Avatar being in a test state is that sometimes whole systems can be rewritten as just part of the process. Case in point: With the newest release for the game, the entire progression system is being changed to an on-use system. This makes logical sense (you get better at hitting things with a sword by hitting things with a sword a lot) but it does mean a slightly wonky reworking of the current skill progression, which means that players will need to keep their eyes open for anything strange going on with skills and abilities as they play the newest release.

Crafting revisions have also made it into this version of the game, which now includes crafting skills that improve over time and influence the final result. There are also quality of life changes and some more minor features, like the first pass of the game’s weather systems. Read the full notes to see everything that’s been changed, and get ready to try this build for yourself later today.

Great news! Death to meaningless XP and levels. Always good to see a game going this route.

Lheiah Detton Foesmasher Delayed response, but no, that’s not true – far as I can tell, he’s still as active as ever.  I don’t know how much involvement he has though – i’m not a backer at a tier that sees that deep down the rabbit hole :)

I just got done playing a little of the new build, and I like the new use-based system they implemented.  (skills gain power with use, unlocking new abilities after you use them enough, rather than XP granting skill points.)   There is indeed no downside to locking runes, but one thing I did run into is that locked runes are not immediately available when you toggle on combat mode – you have to wait their cooldown first, which feels a little awkward, but I might be doing something wrong :)  My characters’ still a noob.

Detton Foesmasher I hear that Star Long is no longer in charge of the combat system, is this true?

SeanNeubert It helped me too!  Thanks!  I’m staying on the fence for the time being.

Foesmasher Yes, but you can now lock skills at no penalty (they removed the penalty for locking skills) — The benefit for using the deck system still is that you can combine skills during combat for more effect, but I think that’s it.

is combat in this game still the ‘deck’ system?

I love the fact that they are making this game, but my biggest issue is that it seems they are going out of their way to cater to the whales.

TheChiHawk I think it’s much simpler than that, Skills advance through use, therefore every time you swing a sword you get better at swinging a sword. Nothing to do with the mob you’re swinging it at or the xp you get for killing it.

I played for hours this morning and had a blast. The new skill system is great, and I had lots of fun rating skills and craftjng some collars. I even noticed quite a bit of performance increase, expect for inside The Epitaph. Man I lagged badly in there. Fun fun.
