ESPN is hiring an e-sports editor

Remember a year or so ago when ESPN CEO John Skipper created a minor stink in the nerdosphere by pooh-poohing e-sports and intimating that the worldwide cheerleader didn’t care about the competitive gaming scene?

“It’s not a sport, it’s a competition,” Skinner told Recode regarding e-sports. “Chess is a competition. Checkers is a competition. Mostly, I’m interested in doing real sports.”

Apparently that’s out the window now, since the megalithic sports news network is currently shopping for an e-sports editor. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of StarCraft 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, and others.

Apparently they do give fucks what “competition” is being played.

Silverbourne Karl_Hungus tobascodagama PurpleCopper Sports don’t require athletic feats or even activity. Sport can be playing effing mini-putt. It won’t be an exciting or respected sport, but its sport.

tobascodagama PurpleCopper Competitive fishing is a sport. Actually, fishing is a sport. Things like be several things at once: leisure, athletic, sport, etc. People, particularly in the modern west as I’ve seen, seem to confuse ‘sport’ with ‘competitive athletic profit-driven sport’. Like that’s the only way something can count as friggin sport.

Karl_Hungus Its a sport. Its not as major as many athletic sports, but its a sport. This reminds me of all the hand wringing about what ‘makes a game’. Jesus Christ.

Damonvile Ecchiboy1 Its a sport. They call it an e-sport in order to get people like you to not hassle it too much.

DaemonHardrod Yes. They’re not athletic, or only athletic if you stretch them, but they indeed can be sports. The 19th century definition has typically meant physical activity is involved in its focus, yes, but ‘sport’ has meant so many things before that. Generally, ‘sport’ is a leisurely activity that we may play in competition or even cooperation. The point engaging of sport is to *actively* have fun, instead of more passively (being the audience to something).

TLDR: Yes, chess is sport. And billiards. And poker. And indeed, D&D. But they’re not, or barely, athletic. Athletic sports fans are up in arms about electronic games being considered sports, but that’s just because they held cultural control about the word for a while :P.

Xijit While I don’t love MOBAs, my thought was “I can do this, I can like this” at the idea of going to bars and restaurants with more MOBAs than athletic sports on the televisions in the next couple decades or whatever..

BKone Pesko  That would actually be fun to see like a Roleplaying channel that would focus on tabletop RP games or like stories in MMOs and stuff.
