Yesterday’s Heroes & Generals post got me to thinking about MMOFPS titles. Heroes & Generals really isn’t one, in my opinion, despite its developers referring to it as such in multiple press releases. It’s too small in terms of concurrent player count to really deserve the “massively” part of the MMOFPS moniker, at least to my mind.
When I think of the term MMOFPS, I think of sprawling titles like PlanetSide and World War II Online which feature truly massive (and zoneless) land areas and which support hundreds if not thousands of simultaneous combatants. Using my definition, then, there have only been three true MMOFPS titles ever produced: PlanetSide, PlanetSide 2, and WW2OL, which later had its named changed to Battleground Europe. What do you think, MOP readers? Do you agree that those three are it in terms of MMOFPS titles? Which one would you anoint as the greatest MMOFPS of all time? Vote after the cut!
