Tribes: Ascend test server rewrites classes in a major way

Kyle, the deal is this - I used to think that my job was making sure a very specific sort of ship didn't get past orbit. And that was my job, and I did it. And then one day? They told me that it wasn't important any more, and that those ships could land, and no one had wanted them shot down for a very long time. And you know what, Kyle? It turns out - and I'm as surprised as anyone - that I just really, really like shooting down spaceships. So now I'm freelance.

Tribes: Ascend is getting updates again, with the first update hitting the test server soon. So what are you expecting? A bit of balance adjustment, a new map, or the complete gutting, overhaul, and major alteration of the game’s class system? The third is what you’re getting, at least with the first build available for the test server. All of the classes are being rolled into three armor weights, with every given weight being able to equip the same basic number of weapons.

Weapons are also now divided into classes to prevent players from equipping, say, four different kinds of rocket launcher at once. Each class now has nine loadouts for free, with several default starting weapons made free for everyone. The stated purpose of this particular patch is to see what balance issues are caused by such a drastic overhaul so those issues can be corrected; hopping into the test server once it becomes available (on or before September 14th) will certainly help.

No, I really think Tribes:Ascend is a worthy addition to the Tribes franchise. I played a LOT of both Starsiege Tribes and Tribes 2 and Tribes:Ascend’s gameplay feels true to the franchise. My complaint has to do with how Hi-Rez handled the monetization (I was insulated from most of that since I opted to pay the $30 for the game which enabled me to unlock load outs not available to the free players). The main problem was it took far too long to earn the points necessary to get those load outs if you didn’t pay real money for them. It caused an uproar among the community, but rather than attempting to diplomatically address the issue, Hi-Rez was condescending to its player base and seemed to throw a hissy fit wherein they stopped all support for and development of the game. It is possible they never intended to fully abandon the game, but the timing of the “blow up” made it seem like they did it to punish the players for complaining. Bottom line, they acted very unprofessionally responding to players’ legitimate complaints regarding to the way Hi-Rez implemented the monetization side of things.
There was also a problem with certain weapons being imbalanced, but all shooters have that issue at one time or another

deekay_zero Joseph C I realize. Doesn’t hurt to hope though. Sadly, Hirez are too frelling stupid to see what mods like Counter Strike and Team Fortress Classic did for their game. I was kinda hoping these screaming idiots would just hand the property off to a decent gaming studio that’d do something with the IP.

Well companys only have so much resources. They took everyone off these projects and put them on Smite to save their company in essence. Now that things are looking solid, hopefully they can make tribes ascend…. into tribes3,

…is it me, or does this seem like it’s taking the game way back to what it used to be, back before Vengeance and such?

The whole no-more-classes situation makes it seem a lot more like Tribes 2 to me, which is probably a great step.  It’ll be nothing like the real mods we used to have (I’m afraid that era is dying day by day), but at least there’ll be some agency as far as build is concerned.

Silverbourne Are you referring to Starsiege Tribes?  I like that game a lot but darn that was many years ago.

The game itself is good, probably being made better with these tests. Hi-Rez, on the other hand…

Silverbourne It’s the old game but they’ve put a small dev team on it to start adding new stuff.

Now if they had Mod Support and a team like the Renegades/Ultra Renegades Group. Maybe trap the Mod Tools behind a purchase wall that includes all the stuff in the game in one big bundle, like $20 – $30. That way they get a full game, complete mod tools, and the ability to create. Maybe even map.
