Massively Opinionated: Which MMORPG has the best F2P model?

186

Watchers of this show will know that usually Larry Everett hosts the show, and he invites two or three guests to debate MMO tropes to the death, but this week, Larry is in the hot seat, and he’s battling Mike Byrne from MMOBomb. And MassivelyOP’s own Tina Lauro judged this week’s debate on some of the large-scale ideas that make or break MMOs.

The rules of this debate haven’t changed a bit, though: The panelists are given four questions before the show so that they have time to prepare an argument. They present each answer to the host and are awarded a point based on the argument given. The person with the most points at the end of the show gets one internet cookie and fame to last a lifetime.

Topics

1. Which MMORPG has the best free-to-play model?

2. What one thing will finally topple World of Warcraft?

3. When pitting one class from one MMO against the class of another MMO, which two classes would make the most interesting fight?

4. Build the most successful MMORPG. Give the genre, three primary features, and the developer.

So I’ve only watched the first question and had to stop it to come down here.
I’m a huge star wars fan and if you just walk through my front door its very clearly evident. Despite that I absolutley refuse to play swotr because the cash shop utterly disgusted me. Its one of only 2 games that are fun but are on my boycott list purley because of the cash shop. I was stunned that Mike lost that (just as stunned as I was when Larry picked swotr lol).
That being said I still <3 you guys even if you’re wrong ; D

Swtor, must be the biggest joke of the article.

For me one of best (if not the best) cash shop has Firefall.  Basicly nothing in it is “must-have” beside maybe glider and lgv. And all of it can be bought either on market, or you can exchange in-game currency to cash-shop currency.

Rift, GW2, TERA (immersion breaks and grind pushed me away, but they’re still one of the most fair models out there), sorta-kinda SWTOR, in that just about any quality of life improvement can be bought from other players using in-game currency, but it’s still not as cool as Rift, seeing as you still have to subscribe to SWTOR to unbreak what’s broken for you.
I’m probably missing a few but I’ve been on a long hiatus.

You and me, we’re good. I’m good with a debate. I don’t think you insulted me personally (nor any of the other guests for that matter). So no need to worry, but I do thank you for mentioning it.

I enjoy a good debate, but I seriously have no idea what you’re talking about. So I’m stepping way from this thread because it seems that you’ve shifted the conversation from debating my opinion to insulting me personally.

Shaddoe Enikuo  I just wanted to be clear that I do understand the point of the show, that it is just a debate, and you guys are making the best arguments you can for your choice. It’s a light-hearded, friendly debate that I enjoy watching, while also sometimes arguing at my monitor. And, I recognize that it’s way more challenging for you to defend your choices in the moment than it is for me to pick it apart in the comments, at my leisure.
I also don’t think you’re some shill for SWTOR or anything. I know that you’re a fan, of course. But, I get that it was just the horse you picked in that particular race.
I had a great time telling you how wrong you were today :) I don’t want you to think that the spirit of the show is lost on me and that this was a super-serious disagreement…about how wrong you were.(Did I mention the wrongness?) So, I hope getting flamed in the comments today didn’t ruin the  experience for you. It looked like you were having fun being in the hot seat.

(Also, I didn’t mean to imply in my last reply that quality doesn’t make something good, which is ridiculous. I meant that profitability doesn’t, but I’m thinking that you probably got that.)
