The Daily Grind: Are there MMOs that you wish you liked more than you do?

Darn it all!

My new roommate wants so badly to like Defiance. She bought two of the ultimate collector’s editions after they were deeply discounted. Yet for all her desire to like the game, she just doesn’t. It’s a genuine and heartfelt effort that just doesn’t pan out, and I honestly can relate; there are games I’ve wanted to love with all my heart, but once I had my grubby paws on them, I couldn’t muster more than mild enthusiasm.

This has nothing to do with the quality of the game much of the time. I can’t quite bring myself to love Lord of the Rings Online, but it’s a top-notch game. So what about you? Are there games you want to like more than you do? Not necessarily because of a failing in the game’s design, but issues that you just can’t seem to get over?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

It’s a toss up between ESO and FFXIV:

FFXIV: This game ranks so high because, like many, I really wanted it to be FFXI-2. I’ve been around the block a bit but FFXI was by and far my most enjoyable MMO experience for many reasons. FFXIV kinda falls flat. The story is good and overall the gameplay isn’t bad but over all the other problems I could bring up it’s the combat system that bugs me the most. Every class has a pre-defined “rotation” of attacks with a few abilities you can toss in here or there that usually have long cool downs. This removes the entire sense of accomplishment you earn by learning to play your class over simply being able to follow instructions.

ESO: This game still has a broken identity. It’s an MMO but so much of the content seems single player focused and even if you force it and group up anyway, everything is so easy you don’t WANT to be in a group (save for instanced dungeons). Otherwise the game itself is good but I can play Skyrim for a more polished single-player experience and just about any other MMO for a better MMO experience.

FF14 – I really want to play this game more… but once you start hitting the group-walls… it became a game of ‘I really want to like this enough to put up with this ‘waiting game”….
TSW – Really wonderful and well thought out game… But it suffers from the flip side of what I suffered from in FF14… the solo-wall. Playing in a group only to stumble upon something you HAVE to do solo… it just happened too many times.

Champions Online – Being a long-time pen’n’paper Champions RPG/Hero System player, I was so looking forward to this… only to be tripped up by the design/mechanics choices the developers made. I wanted so to like this game. Enough that I am a lifetimer as is my wife… but she doesn’t play at all and I rarely do…

DCUO – See CO above. I am also a long-time comic book fan. The game was fun until I got to level 30 and discovered that the game sort of fell apart… I so WANTED to like the game… also, again, like CO, some of the design/mechanics just… turn me off.

RIFT – I so want to like this game, mostly because of some friends that really, really like it. But… well… it’s rich and full and I can play it free… wait… why did I fall asleep on the keyboard?
ESO – What can I say… I loved the Elder Scrolls non-MMO games. But the launch version of this game had such a drab and plain color to all the graphics (thank heavens for some of the later patches that added more color) and then there was the confusion of identity the game had, was it an MMO or a solo game? Could it make up its mind? So many grouping bugs. So much seeming focus on things I wasn’t really interested in. These days I am still playing only because it is what my little MMO group is currently willing to play. I really WANT to like it… but I can’t say I do.
Each of the games I have described above I’d really want to enjoy… but I just can’t. FF14 because I have to spend too much time sitting around for a grouping que to pop for the next ‘raid-like’ content I HAVE to complete to progress in the game. TSW because I made too many incorrect choices in equipment progression and just don’t feel like playing the first 3 zones yet again! CO/DCUO because the mechanics of playing get in the way. RIFT because its boring to me. ESO… it’s Elder Scrolls.. it SHOULD be more enjoyable than it is. Honest!

GW2 is at the top of my list for this. Also Wakfu but I dont think I stuck around long enough the first time to give it a fair chance. Been meaning to correct that.

I expected a lot of people to say Eve and TSW. I didn’t expect every other post to be GW2!

Gw2, the secret world.

I really loved Gw2 during its beta and a bit after launch, never managed to recapture that feeling.

I think its clear that someone needs to make a Skyrim/Witcher game that can accommodate up to 4 players in the world. Just enough for you to have a blast with your friends, but not too much that it completely cheapens and destroys the illusion of being unique in the world.

ESO.   Looks good, people seem to love it, but it just fell flat for me.   And, i guess War Thunder.   Another game company simply does it better.

FFXIV – I just can’t handle the pain in the ass forced grouping just to do the main story and be able to get to other zones. I like crafting, gathering and exploring and don’t like having those gated behind that. I have gone back to Lotro, where I feel more free – to explore, to craft and to enjoy the Epic story at my leisure due to the good solo options they have available.
